What's Actually In Aurora Air Today?
What High AQI Means for Your Lungs in Aurora
How to Read AQI
The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures how polluted the air is and how it may affect your health.
0–50 (Good): Air quality is satisfactory.
51–100 (Moderate): Acceptable, but some pollutants may pose minor concerns.
101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
151–200 (Unhealthy)
201–300 (Very Unhealthy)
301+ (Hazardous)
Moderate
Still okay for most, but if you have asthma or allergies, take it easy and avoid long outdoor workouts.

Check Today's Live Real Time Air Quality Index AQI Map in Aurora, IL Now
The live map above shows Aurora's current Air Quality Index (AQI), its color and the pollutant behind it. Green (0–50) and yellow (51–100) mean most people keep their plans. At orange (101–150), sensitive groups should ease off hard outdoor effort. At Filterbuy, we make air filters, so we read that map for what to do indoors next.
This page covers Aurora, Illinois. For Colorado, see Filterbuy's Aurora, CO AQI map.
TL;DR
Summer ozone and Canadian smoke push Aurora's AQI up. Aurora's monitor tracks only fine particles (PM2.5), so check the pollutant before you act: smoke calls for filtration, ozone for better timing.
Key Takeaways
Aurora, Illinois' second-largest city, spans four counties, each at least partly in the Chicago ozone nonattainment area.
Aurora's Illinois EPA monitor measures PM2.5 only; ozone values come from other sites.
Aurora's 2021–2023 annual PM2.5 design value was 9.4 µg/m³, above the 9.0 µg/m³ standard EPA set in 2024.
On July 16, 2026, Canadian wildfire smoke pushed Aurora's air into the Hazardous range.
HVAC filters capture smoke particles but not ozone.
Reading the Live Aurora AQI Map: Pollutant First, Number Second
Filterbuy's rule: read the pollutant first and the number second. The pollutant says which step helps; the number says how urgently.
For PM2.5, close the windows and filter. For ozone, timing matters, since this gas builds through hot afternoons. Filterbuy's guide to using EPA AirNow shows how to check any Aurora ZIP code.
Aurora AQI Categories and the Household Response for Each
Each AirNow category, with a practical step for an Aurora home:
Categories: EPA AirNow. Household steps: Filterbuy.
At an AQI of 100, Filterbuy's action line, switch to MERV 13, set the thermostat fan to On, run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room and close the house up. One more rule we lean on: for PM2.5, an AQI of 50 equals 9.0 µg/m³, the federal annual standard. Routine low-yellow PM2.5 days are what push Aurora's yearly average above that line.
Why Aurora's AQI Can Trail What You See and Smell
Aurora's AQI can lag for two reasons. First, AirNow's NowCast blends several hours of readings, so a fast smoke plume can look milder on the map than it feels.
Second, monitor placement. When Filterbuy researched this page, the Illinois EPA's 2026 Ambient Air Monitoring Network Plan showed us that its Aurora site, at 1240 N. Highland Ave., measures PM2.5 only. Ozone comes from Elgin and the Morton Arboretum in Lisle; Elgin logged 21 days above the 0.070 ppm ozone standard in 2023, per the Illinois EPA 2023 Air Quality Report. Smell smoke? Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.
Is the Air in Aurora Safe to Breathe Today?
Whether Aurora's air is safe depends on the live AQI and who is breathing. Up to 100, healthy adults carry on. At 101, sensitive groups should shorten hard outdoor effort, and at 151, everyone should.
Sensitive groups include children, adults over 65, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and people with asthma, COPD or heart disease, who should follow their doctor's plan and AirNow guidance. Kids breathe more air for their size; rethink Fox Valley Park District practices on orange days. See Filterbuy's guides on protecting kids from outdoor air pollution and exercising outside when air quality is bad.
Aurora Air Quality Forecasts and Action Day Alerts
The Illinois EPA forecasts air quality for an eight-county Chicago area that includes all four of Aurora's counties. A forecast of orange (101–150) brings an Air Pollution Action Day, and 151 or higher brings a Red Action Day. Free alerts: EnviroFlash or the AirNow app.
The Illinois EPA's July 2026 air quality advisory recommended recirculating air conditioners and high-efficiency filters. On action days, move workouts to early morning for ozone, or indoors for smoke.
How Aurora Compares with Its Chicagoland Neighbors
No single source compares Fox Valley monitors, so Filterbuy built Table 2 from two Illinois EPA reports. Aurora lands mid-pack at 9.4 µg/m³ (2021–2023), level with Naperville and just below Elgin and Joliet.
Source: Illinois EPA. Federal annual standard: 9.0 µg/m³.
Mid-pack still means above 9.0; only rural Braidwood was under it. The Illinois EPA has recommended nonattainment designations for Kane, DuPage and Will counties under the 2024 standard. Compare Filterbuy's Illinois air quality map and the Joliet and Chicago AQI pages.
What's in Aurora's Air Through the Year
High Aurora readings trace to warm-month ozone and year-round PM2.5.
Ground-level ozone forms when sunlight reacts with emissions, including I-88 and Route 59 traffic. EPA's Green Book classifies the Chicago ozone area, Aurora's counties included, as Serious. More on ground-level ozone.
PM2.5 comes from exhaust, diesel rail (Aurora ends Metra's BNSF Line), wood burning and smoke. More on PM2.5 fine particles.
Filterbuy mapped them by season, adding pollen, which the AQI leaves out.

When Wildfire Smoke Reaches Aurora
Smoke from fires hundreds of miles away in Canada is Aurora's biggest short-term air risk. On July 16, 2026, it pushed Aurora and Elgin into the Hazardous range while Chicago's particle index reached 355, according to Associated Press reporting. On June 27, 2023, smoke gave Chicago the world's worst air quality among major cities.
When smoke is forecast, start with official guidance:
Check AirNow, the Illinois EPA forecast and Filterbuy's Illinois wildfire smoke map.
Put a MERV 13 filter in the HVAC; the EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoke.
Set the thermostat fan to On so the system filters continuously.
Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first (our advice; EPA's covers one clean room).
Close up; skip candles, frying, smoking and vacuuming.
Smoke loads filters fast. EPA advises replacing one when it looks dark brown or black, often well before the normal interval, and keeping spares. In Filterbuy's experience, a MERV 13 that darkens quickly is catching particles, not failing.
Protecting an Aurora Home Without Central Air
No ducts means no filter slot. With radiators or window units, a portable HEPA air cleaner is your primary defense on smoke days, not a backup.
That can include older homes in Aurora's historic districts, which hold 136 documented Sears catalog homes. Choose one by its smoke Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): EPA's guidance is two-thirds of floor area, so a 12-by-14-foot bedroom needs about 112 CFM. Skip ionizers and ozone generators; EPA advises against ozone-producing cleaners. A DIY box-fan cleaner with MERV 13 filters is a fair stopgap; use a UL- or ETL-marked fan from 2012 or later.
Filterbuy's Take: What Aurora's Numbers Tell a Filter Maker
Aurora's numbers show what a live map cannot: its filtration need is steady, not dramatic. Ordinary yellow days, not smoke days, build the above-standard PM2.5 average.
Filterbuy makes its air filters in the U.S. for more than two million households, and we keep seeing that the filter that matters on a smoke day is the one already in. That is why we suggest MERV 11 as the everyday default for most Aurora homes, with a MERV 13 on the shelf before summer. We set our action line at AQI 100. That is one point before the orange category begins, so the better filter is in before the reading turns. We also say it plainly: filters do nothing for ozone.
The number outside is a forecast for a whole county. The filter in your return is the part of it you actually get a vote on.

Choosing a Filter for the Aurora AQI Reading
Match the filter to the reading and the pollutant. In an Aurora forced-air system, MERV 11 handles everyday dust and dander; MERV 13 is the step up at AQI 100 or when smoke is forecast. See what an AQI of 100 means.
Fit check: confirm your filter size, as with any filter.
EPA notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems can use MERV 13 without equipment problems, provided the filter is replaced often. Just confirm your size.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Air Quality in Aurora, IL Today?
The live map above shows Aurora's current AQI and main pollutant. Readings of 0–50 are Good; above 100, sensitive groups should limit hard outdoor activity.
Is the Air Quality Bad in Aurora Today?
It is bad for sensitive groups above 100 on the live map, and for everyone above 150. For smoke, close up and filter; for ozone, exercise in the morning.
Where Does Aurora's Air Quality Data Come From?
Illinois EPA monitors, reported through AirNow. The Aurora site measures PM2.5; ozone comes from Elgin and Lisle.
Why Is Aurora's Air Quality Worse in Summer?
In Aurora, summer heat and sunlight turn metro emissions into ozone, and Canadian smoke tends to arrive then, so exercise in the morning.
Does a Furnace Filter Help on Bad Air Days in Aurora?
Yes, for particles: a MERV 13 with the fan set to On reduces smoke particles and PM2.5 indoors. It does nothing for ozone or other gases.
