Best Furnace Brands (2026): Most Reliable Gas Furnaces Compared
October 21, 2026

Trane, AirEase, and Payne are the most reliable gas furnace brands in 2026, each rated “excellent” for predicted reliability by Consumer Reports. American Standard, Carrier, and Bryant follow close behind. Reliability tends to follow the parent company, and just six companies own most U.S. furnace brands.
Rated excellent: Trane, AirEase, Payne
Rated very good: American Standard, Carrier, Bryant
Rated poor: Broan, Frigidaire, Maytag
Whichever brand you pick, your filter fits the cabinet, not the badge, so take the quick quiz below to find your match.

TL;DR
In Consumer Reports' 2026 ratings, Trane, AirEase, and Payne are the most reliable gas furnace brands, with American Standard, Carrier, and Bryant not far behind. Because most brands belong to just six parent companies, budget badges often share engineering with premium ones. At Filterbuy, we've learned that a great installer and a clean filter matter as much as the logo.
Key Takeaways
Trane, AirEase, and Payne earned Consumer Reports' top rating for predicted reliability.
Six parent companies own most U.S. furnace brands: Carrier Global, Trane Technologies, Lennox International, Daikin, Rheem, and Bosch.
Register within 60 to 90 days, or most brands drop parts coverage from 10 years to 5.
Filters follow the cabinet, not the furnace brand. One 16x25x5 size fits Honeywell, Carrier, Bryant, and Lennox cabinets; Goodman and York need another.
What Are the Best Furnace Brands in 2026?
For premium reliability and features, the best furnace brands in 2026 are Trane, American Standard, Carrier, Bryant, and Lennox. Payne, AirEase, and Goodman are solid value picks. Trane is the only brand to earn Consumer Reports' top marks for both reliability and owner satisfaction.

Which Furnace Brands Are Made by the Same Company?
Most U.S. furnace brands are sister brands under six parent companies, and two of them grew recently: Rheem bought the Nortek brands in 2024, and Bosch bought York and Coleman in 2025.
Sister brands often share factories, too: Consumer Reports notes that Rheem and Ruud come from the same manufacturer.
What Are the Most Reliable Furnace Brands?
Trane, AirEase, and Payne are the most reliable gas furnace brands, each earning an "excellent" predicted-reliability rating from Consumer Reports. Nine more earned "very good," all from the Carrier, Trane, or Lennox family. The ratings draw on 34,591 member-owned furnaces. About a quarter of gas furnaces still break down by year 10, and most last 15 to 20 years.
Reliability tracks the parent company. When Filterbuy sorted Consumer Reports' ratings by owner, the pattern was hard to miss.

What Is the Best Gas Furnace to Buy in 2026?
For most homes, the best gas furnace in 2026 is a condensing model rated at least 95% AFUE, paired with a two-stage or modulating burner and a variable-speed blower. Have it sized with a Manual J load calculation, and aim for 97% AFUE in cold northern states.
AFUE pays off in long winters. Consumer Reports estimates that a 90% model can cost about $1,000 more than an 80% one, a premium that pays back fastest in the Northeast and Midwest.
ENERGY STAR raised the bar. As of July 31, 2026, its certification requires 97% AFUE in northern states and 95% in southern ones.
The 2028 rule is in limbo. The Department of Energy requires new gas furnaces made after December 18, 2028, to reach 95% AFUE. In June 2026, the Supreme Court sent the case back for review, so the rule still stands while DOE weighs a delay to 2030. The rule never forces you to replace a working furnace.
No federal tax credit for 2026 installs. The Section 25C credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, so look to utility and state rebates instead.
Are There Furnace Brands to Avoid?
Consumer Reports suggests steering clear of Broan, Frigidaire, and Maytag gas furnaces, which all earned poor predicted-reliability ratings. York, Luxaire, and Gibson also scored below average.
Even so, the installer matters more than the badge. Red flags with any brand:
No Manual J load calculation. Without one, you risk an oversized furnace that short-cycles and wears out early.
A DIY or handyman install, which can void your coverage under terms like Trane's.
How Do Furnace Warranties Compare?
Most major brands double your parts coverage from 5 to 10 years if you register online in time, but the deadline depends on the brand. Trane and Goodman give you 60 days, while Carrier and York give you 90.
Compiled by Filterbuy from each manufacturer's published warranty terms, October 2026. States that bar registration requirements, such as California and Florida, give owners the longer term automatically. Terms vary by model.
Filterbuy's advice: ask your installer to register the furnace before they leave, and keep the confirmation email.
Do Different Furnace Brands Use Different Air Filters?
No. Filters are sized to the slot or cabinet, not the furnace brand, so a 16x25x1 filter fits any 16x25x1 slot. Five-inch filters cross brands too, though not along the family lines above.
From Filterbuy's side of the cabinet, the brand map looks different. The 16x25x5 we cut for Honeywell cabinets also fits Carrier, Bryant, and Lennox, and the Goodman size fits Amana, York, Coleman, Gibson, and Maytag as well. Match the cabinet sticker, not the furnace badge. We make all three 16x25x5 sizes and all three 20x25x5 sizes ourselves.

20x25x5 is a shopping label, not a measurement. We make all three of the filters sold under it, so we can tell you plainly which one fits your cabinet.

Measure before you order. Wrong depth is the most common ordering mistake Filterbuy sees, so check the actual size printed on your old filter or follow our guide to measuring an air filter.
The cabinet sets your filter budget, too. At Filterbuy's August 2026 MERV 8 prices, a filter for the Goodman-family cabinet costs about 46% more than one for the Honeywell family. With one or two changes a year, that works out to roughly $35–69 versus $24–47, so ask installers which cabinet they'll use.
Winter is filter season. We've found that a filter that looks fine in October can be choked by December. A clogged filter strains the blower and can trip an overheating shutdown, so check yours monthly and read how often to change your furnace filter in winter.
While you're at it, check your local AQI and our winter air quality guides.
Pick the right MERV. MERV 8 handles everyday dust, MERV 11 adds pet dander and pollen, and MERV 13, which the EPA recommends wherever your system can handle it, captures smoke. Before upgrading, read whether a high-efficiency filter suits your furnace and our MERV rating guide.
Reviewer's note: David Clark points out that most airflow warnings about high-MERV filters were written with 1-inch filters in mind. With several times more media, a 5-inch filter can run MERV 13 with far less resistance.
Filterbuy makes more than 600 sizes, plus custom sizes, and ships them free. Set up air filter auto-delivery and a fresh filter will arrive before the coldest weeks.
Supporting Statistics
1. Natural gas still heats nearly half of U.S. homes.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), natural gas was the main heating fuel in 47% of U.S. homes in 2024.

2. A modern furnace wastes far less fuel than an old one.
Older furnaces run at 56% to 70% AFUE, while today's high-efficiency models reach 90% to 98.5%, according to the Department of Energy.

3. Installation decides the efficiency you get.
ENERGY STAR reports that more than half of new U.S. heating and cooling systems miss their rated efficiency because of improper installation, which can cut performance by up to 30%.
