What's In The Smoke
30xSmaller than a human hair
Fine enough to reach deep into the lungs. A MERV 13 is built to capture it.

It Doesn't Stay Local
Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.
What To Do During A Smoke Event
Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.
- Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
- Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
- Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
- Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
- Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
- Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.
The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke
During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

- Captures PM2.5 particles
- Blocks ash, soot, and smoke odor
- Keeps your indoor air safe—even when the outdoor air is dangerous
- Meets the EPA's recommended rating for filtering fine wildfire smoke particles.

Facts About Wildfires
Over 70,000 wildfires burn in the U.S. every year.
Wildfire smoke can travel 1,000+ miles, affecting states that aren't even near the blaze.
Exposure to wildfire smoke can worsen asthma, trigger heart issues, and lead to ER visits.
Indoor air can hold more fine particles during wildfire events unless it's properly filtered.
The EPA advises using MERV 13 filters or portable HEPA air cleaners during wildfire smoke events.

Bridgeport holds Connecticut's wildfire smoke record. On June 7, 2023, Canadian smoke pushed the city's fine particle AQI to 313, the state's highest reading since federal records began in 1999. Filterbuy has shipped filters through a decade of smoke events, and that day proved the sky is a poor guide. Use the live map here, and tap AirNow for ground readings.
TL;DR
Bridgeport's worst smoke drifts in from Canada, so trust ground monitors over the sky. Once the AQI is over 100, homes with HVAC switch to MERV 13 with the fan On, every home runs a HEPA purifier in each occupied room, and the house stays closed.
Key Takeaways
Bridgeport's AQI hit 313 on June 7, 2023, the state's highest reading since 1999.
Connecticut DEEP forecast smoke levels up to Unhealthy for Fairfield County on July 16, 2026.
Fairfield County earned an F for ozone in 2026, and no filter removes ozone.
DEEP smoke forecasts give about a day's notice, and delivery takes two, so keep a spare MERV 13.
How To Read The Live Bridgeport Wildfire And Smoke Map
Read the colored monitor dots, not the gray shading. The map shows fires and smoke plumes traced by NOAA satellites, and AirNow adds breathing-height readings that can stay green under a white sky over Seaside Park. Filterbuy's guide on how to read a wildfire smoke map explains each layer.
My first real smoke season in the Bay Area taught me to stop checking the window and start checking the map. ... Your eyes are the least reliable instrument you own.

How To Read Today's Bridgeport Air Quality
Find today's number on Filterbuy's Bridgeport air quality index map. During smoke, PM2.5, the fine particles in smoke, drives the 0 to 500 index. Once it passes 100, switch to MERV 13, set the fan to On, and run a HEPA air purifier in each occupied room. People in sensitive groups should also follow their doctor's plan and AirNow's guidance.

Categories follow the US EPA Air Quality Index. Confirm MERV 13 in your HVAC manual, along with the size.
Our Three-Question Smoke Check For Bridgeport
Three questions tell you whether today's haze calls for filtering. The Filterbuy team asks them on every smoke day.
Smoke or ozone? Check the pollutant on the nearest monitor. PM2.5 calls for filtering, while ozone calls for moving outdoor plans.
Overhead or at the ground? Gray shading over green monitors means the smoke is still aloft. Orange or red monitors mean it has arrived.
Regional or next door? Statewide haze points to Canadian smoke. A sharp smell with a clear map points to a burn nearby.
Why Bridgeport Takes Some Of Connecticut's Worst Canadian Smoke
Recent Canadian smoke has hit southwestern Connecticut hardest. The state's June 7, 2023 air quality bulletin listed Bridgeport at 313, ahead of Danbury at 261 and New Haven at 234. The previous record, 166, had been set a day earlier.
The pattern returned on July 16, 2026, when DEEP forecast Ontario smoke as high as Unhealthy for Fairfield, New Haven, and Litchfield counties.
How To Get A Day's Warning Before Smoke Reaches Bridgeport
You usually get about a day's notice. Both July 2026 DEEP smoke alerts went out at least a day before the worst air.
Get the forecast. Sign up for DEEP's daily AQI forecast notices, or call the hotline at 800-249-1234. Forecasts skip weekends and holidays.
Keep a spare on the shelf. A forecast buys you about a day, and delivery takes two, so the MERV 13 you will need tomorrow should be in the closet today.
Renting? Ask your landlord whether the system accepts MERV 13. If it does not, rely on purifiers in the bedrooms.
Brush Fires Close To Home Are The Other Smoke Source
Brush fires in and around Fairfield County cause shorter, local smoke events. The state reported 256 wildfires statewide in 2025, most started by people, and in fall 2024 crews fought one in Weston, in Fairfield County.
Small brush fires rarely show up on satellites, so a campfire smell on a clear day usually means a burn or wood stove nearby. Our guide on why there is smoke in the air today helps trace it; our statewide Connecticut wildfire and smoke map covers the state, and if you see flames, call 911.
Not Every Bridgeport Air Quality Alert Is About Smoke
Many Bridgeport summer alerts are about ozone, a gas no HVAC filter removes. Fairfield County earned an F for ozone in the American Lung Association's State of the Air 2026 results for Connecticut, the worst in the US east of Texas. On ozone days, move exercise to the morning. Smoke alerts call for the four steps below.
What To Do Inside Your Bridgeport Home When The AQI Is Over 100
Follow AirNow and DEEP guidance first, including any stay-indoors advice. Once the AQI is over 100, Filterbuy's rule is that homes with an HVAC system switch to a MERV 13 filter, and every home runs a HEPA air purifier in each occupied room. Separately, US EPA guidance on preparing a home for smoke recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoky periods and notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems handle it when the filter is replaced often.
Install a MERV 13 filter. Shop MERV 13 air filters in your exact size, and confirm the rating in your HVAC manual the same way you confirm the size. Our MERV rating guide for high AQI days compares the tiers.
Set the fan to On and recirculate. Close any fresh-air intake and move the fan from Auto to On. Our explainer on whether air conditioners filter wildfire smoke covers central air.
Run a HEPA air purifier in each occupied room. Bedrooms first.
Close the house. Shut windows and doors, close the fireplace damper, and roll a towel against drafty gaps. Skip candles, frying, smoking, and vacuums without HEPA filters.
Skip ozone generators and ionizers, since the EPA advises against air cleaners that produce ozone. MERV 13 captures particles, not gases or odors. For odor, see our Odor Eliminator carbon filters.
How To Size A Portable Air Cleaner For Smoke
For wildfire smoke, choose a portable HEPA air cleaner whose smoke CADR, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, matches the room's floor area. EPA's clean-room guidance and the AHAM 2/3 sizing rule set the everyday minimum at two-thirds of the square footage.
A 12-by-14-foot bedroom covers 168 square feet, so it needs a smoke CADR of 112 day-to-day and 168 during smoke. Our guide to running an air purifier during wildfire season covers placement.
If Your Bridgeport Home Has No Ductwork
Homes with radiators, window units, or ductless mini-splits have no central filter slot, so portable HEPA air cleaners in each occupied room are the primary defense.
Set window units to recirculate and seal gaps around them. As a stopgap, US EPA research found a box fan fitted with MERV 13 filters works for one room. Use a certified fan made in 2012 or later, and never leave it running unattended.
Choosing And Timing Filters For Smoke Season
Inspect the filter often during smoke and replace it when it looks dark brown or black, which can be well before the normal interval. Filterbuy sees season-rated filters load with soot in weeks, and reviewer David Clark, a licensed HVAC technician, traces most post-smoke service calls to exactly that. Our guide on how often to change your air filter when the AQI is high has more, and Filterbuy cuts custom air filters for odd sizes.
Table 2. Filter Tiers For Bridgeport Smoke Days
Confirm fit in your HVAC manual. MERV 13 is not equivalent to True HEPA.
The number on your phone tells you what's happening outside. What happens inside your home once that air comes through the door is still up to you, and that's the part people forget to plan for.

Supporting Statistics
Three findings shaped how Filterbuy built this Bridgeport plan.
1. The CDC's smoke-day line matches Filterbuy's.
The CDC study counted a smoke day as a PM2.5 AQI of 101 or higher. Across 19 such days in 2023, asthma-related ER visits ran 17% above expected, with the largest jump in New York and New Jersey on June 6 to 8.
Source: CDC, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, August 2023
2. Most Canadian smoke stays overhead until it does not.
NASA reports this smoke crosses the Northeast several times each summer, usually unnoticed high up. In June 2023, a coastal low pulled Quebec smoke down to breathing height.

3. MERV 13 plus a HEPA purifier beat MERV 13 alone.
In a 1928 test home during 2020 wildfire smoke, a MERV 13 central system held indoor PM2.5 to about 55% of outdoor levels. With one HEPA air cleaner added, that fell to about 21%.
