What's Actually In Lansing Air Today?
What High AQI Means for Your Lungs in Lansing
How to Read AQI
The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures how polluted the air is and how it may affect your health.
0–50 (Good): Air quality is satisfactory.
51–100 (Moderate): Acceptable, but some pollutants may pose minor concerns.
101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
151–200 (Unhealthy)
201–300 (Very Unhealthy)
301+ (Hazardous)
Moderate
Still okay for most, but if you have asthma or allergies, take it easy and avoid long outdoor workouts.

TL;DR
Filterbuy's live AQI map shows Lansing's air quality right now. Under 50 is Good; above 100, AirNow advises sensitive groups to cut back outdoors. Lansing's air pollution is usually modest, but Canadian wildfire smoke set a local record in July 2026. Filterbuy's action line is AQI 100, where we tell customers to switch to MERV 13.
Reading Lansing's Live AQI Map: What the Colors Tell You Right Now

Key Takeaways
On July 16, 2026, Canadian wildfire smoke pushed Lansing's 24-hour fine-particle (PM2.5) AQI to 408, more than double the previous local record of 194 set on June 29, 2023.
Filterbuy's action line is AQI 100: MERV 13 in the HVAC, the fan set to On, and a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room.
Filterbuy's planning rule for a heavy smoke season is four HVAC filters per return grille: one installed and three spares.
Lansing AQI Levels Explained: What to Do at Each Color
The U.S. AQI runs 0 to 500 across six categories, and the names, ranges and colors below follow EPA AirNow guidance. Filterbuy acts at 100, the top of Moderate, rather than waiting for the reading to turn orange. From 100 up, put a MERV 13 filter in your HVAC, set the fan to On, run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room and close the house up.
| AQI | Category | When Lansing Tends to See It | What to Do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–50 | Good | Clear, breezy days | Your normal filter routine |
| 51–100 | Moderate | Warm afternoons, light haze | Get MERV 13 and spares in place before smoke; start the smoke steps at 100 |
| 101–150 | Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups | Hot, still ozone days; thin smoke | MERV 13, fan On, HEPA cleaner in each occupied room, house closed up |
| 151–200 | Unhealthy | Thicker smoke plumes | Same steps; check the filter more often and keep spares on hand |
| 201–300 | Very Unhealthy | Major smoke events | Follow AirNow and local guidance first; same steps, plus a clean room |
| 301+ | Hazardous | Reached during the July 2026 smoke event | Follow EGLE and local authorities first; our steps support theirs |
When the Lansing AQI Doesn't Match the Sky Outside
Haze over the Capitol dome while the map shows yellow doesn't mean a broken monitor. The EPA reports current AQI as a NowCast, which blends up to 12 hours of data and leans on the most recent hours when conditions shift. So during a fast-moving plume, the number lags what you see and smell. EGLE's 2027 network plan also adds just one new Lansing monitor, according to Bridge Michigan. When your eyes and the map disagree, check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.
Can You Safely Breathe Lansing's Air Today?
Whether Lansing's air is safe to breathe depends on what the live map reads. Under 50, the air is good for everyone, whether you're on the Lansing River Trail or a Michigan State University intramural field. Above 100, AirNow's guidance asks sensitive groups, including people with asthma, COPD or heart disease, children and adults over 65, to limit time outdoors. Above 150, it asks everyone to. If you have asthma, COPD or a heart condition, follow your doctor's plan and official guidance.
Lansing Air Quality Forecasts, Advisories, and Alerts
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) forecasts air quality for mid-Michigan and uses two warning levels. An Air Quality Advisory means two or more monitors in an area are expected to reach Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (orange). An Alert means they're expected to hit Unhealthy (red) or worse.
What's Driving Lansing's AQI? PM2.5, Ozone, and Smoke
The AQI tracks six pollutants, and whichever scores highest sets the number. In Lansing, that's almost always fine particulate (PM2.5) or ground-level ozone.
The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL), the city-owned utility, burned 1.2 million tons of coal in 2012 and none after retiring Erickson Station in November 2022. Highway traffic is now the steadiest local source.
Ozone isn't a chronic problem here either. EGLE lists Michigan's ozone nonattainment areas in West and Southeast Michigan, not Lansing, which leaves wildfire smoke as the biggest swing factor.
Filterbuy's rule: closing windows handles ozone, which breaks down quickly indoors. PM2.5 slips in around doors and windows and lingers for hours, so filtration is how you bring it down, and that's where your MERV rating matters.
Wildfire Smoke Over Lansing: The 2026 Record and What to Do
On July 16, 2026, Canadian wildfire smoke, now Lansing's most serious air-quality risk, pushed the city's 24-hour PM2.5 AQI to 408. That Hazardous reading more than doubled the June 29, 2023 record of 194, per Yale Climate Connections, and because 408 is a 24-hour average, some hours ran higher still. Michigan State University closed outside-air dampers on campus HVAC systems in response.
Official guidance comes first. Check AirNow and EGLE's wildfire smoke page, and if local authorities tell you to stay indoors, relocate or evacuate, follow them. At AQI 100 and above, Filterbuy recommends these four steps, in order:
Switch to a MERV 13 filter in your HVAC. This is the whole-home layer, since the central system moves far more air than any portable unit.
Set the thermostat fan to On. Auto only filters while the system heats or cools; On filters all the time.
Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first.
Close the house up. Keep windows and doors shut, set window units to recirculate, and skip candles, frying, smoking and vacuuming without a sealed unit.
Size each portable cleaner with EPA's clean room rule: a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's square footage. A 300 sq ft bedroom wants a smoke CADR of about 200. Choose a CARB-certified unit, because EPA advises against air cleaners that produce ozone. If you go outside, EGLE's guidance covers fitted N95 respirators. Follow the plumes on our live Michigan wildfire and smoke map.
No Ductwork? Filtering the Air in a Lansing Home Without Central Air
Plenty of older Lansing houses run on boilers and radiators, and many apartments rely on window units. Without ducts there's no whole-home layer, so portable HEPA air cleaners are your primary defense, not a supplement. Filterbuy makes HVAC filters, and this section has nothing to sell.
Put a portable HEPA air cleaner, sized with the CADR rule above, in each occupied room, starting with the bedroom.
A DIY box-fan cleaner built with a MERV 13 filter is a reasonable stopgap, not a replacement for a certified unit. EPA research found the design works. Use a certified box fan from 2012 or newer, and never leave it running unattended.
Don't seal yourself into a hot home. The July 2026 smoke arrived with 90-degree heat. Lansing opens cooling centers during heat emergencies, or call 2-1-1.
Our Take: What a Filter Manufacturer Sees in Lansing's Numbers
Filterbuy has built air filters in its U.S. plants since 2013, so we read Lansing's numbers from the indoor side.
Clean years hide bad days. A good yearly average means little on the day smoke doubles the old record.
Two monitors anchored that record. Together they speak for a metro of about 540,000 people.
Coal is gone, but smoke isn't. BWL's coal exit lowered Lansing's baseline, yet it does nothing about plumes from Canada.
Michigan households reach us most often right after a smoke event, not before one. That timing is backward. Filtration works best as preparation, not response, because a filter ordered the morning the sky turns gray arrives after the plume has passed.
"Smoke loads a filter far faster than everyday dust, so check yours during every smoke event. Put the spare on the shelf in June, not mid-plume in July,"
- Filterbuy Team
Matching Your Furnace Filter to Lansing's AQI
For wildfire smoke, the tier is MERV 13. EPA recommends a filter rated MERV 13 or higher in the central system during smoke events, and notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate MERV 13 without equipment problems when the filter is replaced often. Filterbuy's line for switching is AQI 100.
| AQI ON THE MAP | FILTERBUY TIER | USE IT FOR |
|---|---|---|
| Under 100 | MERV 8 or MERV 11 | Everyday dust and pollen (MERV 8); pets and allergies (MERV 11) |
| 100 and above | MERV 13 | Smoke and high-particle days |
How Many Filters a Lansing Smoke Season Takes
For a heavy smoke season, Filterbuy's planning rule is four filters per return grille: the one in the slot and three spares. EPA's guidance is to replace it when it looks dirty, dark brown or black, which can be well before the normal interval, and to keep extras on hand.
| Your Home | Return Grilles | Filters to Have on Hand |
|---|---|---|
| Condo or small home | 1 | 4 |
| Typical single-story | 2 | 8 |
| Two-story | 3 | 12 |
Filterbuy planning rule for a long smoke season; replace by the look of the filter, not a set interval.
