TL;DR

On most days, Macon, Georgia reads Good to Moderate on the AQI. Its weak spot is the year-round average of fine particles (PM2.5): the Macon-Bibb County–Warner Robins metro earns C grades for ozone and short-term particles but fails on year-round particle pollution (American Lung Association, "State of the Air" 2026). For today's reading, check the live map above.

Filterbuy, a U.S. air filter maker, publishes live AQI pages across Georgia, and Macon's story is the quietest of the group: few bad days, but one stubborn year-round particle problem. See live air quality across Georgia.

Key Takeaways

  • Macon's daily AQI reads Good to Moderate on most days, yet its year-round PM2.5 average fails the ALA's 2026 grade and ranks 45th worst in the nation.

  • Georgia EPD forecasts daily air quality for only three places: metro Atlanta, Macon, and Columbus.

  • AQI 100 is Filterbuy's action line. When fine particles drive the number, switch to MERV 13, set the fan to On, and run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room. Filters do little for ozone.

How to Use the Live Macon Air Quality Map

The Macon AQI map turns hourly pollution readings into a single 0–500 number with a matching color. Start with the color closest to where you live, then look at the pollutant it names. When we checked Georgia's 2026 monitoring plan, Bibb County had two state sites run by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (Georgia EPD). Macon-Allied measures fine particles, while Macon-Forestry measures ozone and sulfur dioxide (Georgia EPD 2026 Ambient Air Monitoring Plan).

Is Macon's Air Safe Today? What Each AQI Color Means

Whether Macon's air is safe to breathe today depends on the color the live map shows (EPA). At Orange, children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with asthma, COPD, or heart disease should shorten hard exertion (CDC), and people with those conditions should follow their doctor's advice.

Where Macon's Air Quality Forecast Comes From

Georgia EPD's forecast team issues a daily ozone and fine-particle forecast, often called a smog alert, for just three places: metro Atlanta, Macon, and Columbus (Georgia EPD).

What's in Macon's Air: The Pollutants Behind the Number

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is Macon's main long-term air pollutant, while ground-level ozone is mostly a summer concern. Around Middle Georgia, PM2.5 comes mainly from interstate traffic and prescribed-burn smoke, with industrial and power-plant emissions adding to the mix. Here is how the ALA's 2026 "State of the Air" report grades the metro, based on 2022–2024 data:

Macon's everyday particle level sits above the federal health standard. Because it rarely turns the map red, the year-round grade is where it shows up.

PM2.5 or Ozone? Check the Pollutant Before You Act

The live map names the pollutant driving the number, and here that is usually PM2.5 or ozone. The difference matters because home HVAC filters are built to catch particles, not gases (EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home).

Macon Has Cleaned Up Its Air Twice. Why One Grade Still Fails

The Macon area covers all of Bibb County plus the part of Monroe County that holds Georgia Power's coal-fired Plant Scherer. EPA found it out of compliance for ozone in 2004 and for fine particles in 2005. Key steps since:

Sources: EPA final rules published in the Federal Register (2007, 2014) and JEA (2022). The Macon area covers all of Bibb County and part of Monroe County.

So why does Macon still fail? Its 2009–2011 particle average was 13.4 µg/m³, comfortably under the 1997 limit of 15.0 µg/m³ (Federal Register). In 2024, EPA lowered the annual limit to 9.0 µg/m³ (EPA).

How Macon's Air Compares With Other Georgia Metros

Macon is cleaner than Atlanta on ozone and steadier than Columbus on particle spikes (ALA 2026). Side by side on Filterbuy's Georgia pages, Macon is the only metro without an A, B, or F on its short-term grades.

Why the Macon AQI Can Lag What You See or Smell

The Macon AQI can trail what is happening outside. The live AQI averages recent hours, so fresh smoke can take a while to show up, and a narrow plume can slip between Bibb County's two monitors. The AQI also skips pollen, which peaks around the March Cherry Blossom Festival. If you smell smoke while the map still reads Green, trust your nose and close up. Then check the Georgia Forestry Commission's fire viewer.

Filterbuy's Take: Macon's Air Problem Is the Quiet Kind

Macon's big outdoor cleanup is done. What remains is a steady particle level that never trips an alarm, so the rest of the work happens indoors. Filterbuy has made pleated air filters in U.S. plants the company owns since 2013. We see the proof firsthand: after a rough stretch of air, the filters customers send back to us come in darker and heavier than in a normal month.

“

In a Middle Georgia summer, the AC cycles on and off all day, and a filter only cleans air while the fan is running. For smoke, MERV 13 is what I’d put in a Macon home, with the thermostat fan switched to On.

What to Do When Macon's AQI Reaches 100

Filterbuy's action line is AQI 100, the top of the Moderate range. When the live map hits 100 and fine particles (PM2.5, the tiny soot in smoke) drive the number, check AirNow and Georgia EPD guidance first. Then take these four steps:

  1. Put a MERV 13 filter in your HVAC system. It treats the whole house.

  2. Set the thermostat fan to On. Auto only filters while the system heats or cools, and EPA notes many systems run under 25% of the time (EPA).

  3. Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, starting with bedrooms. It treats that room harder than the central system can.

  4. Close windows and doors, and skip candles, frying, and smoking while smoke is in.

At 201 and above, follow AirNow and local officials first. Filtration is one layer, not the whole answer.

Which Air Filter Macon's AQI Level Calls For

MERV 13 is the tier Filterbuy recommends for smoke. Separately, EPA recommends a filter rated MERV 13 or higher in the central system during smoke events (EPA).

100+MERV 13With the fan On and HEPA cleaners in occupied rooms

AQI 100 is Filterbuy's action line for MERV 13. Separately, EPA recommends a filter rated MERV 13 or higher during smoke events. On ozone days, HVAC filters help little.

Most furnaces and HVAC systems can use MERV 13 without equipment problems as long as the filter is replaced often, according to EPA (EPA guide). Just confirm the size. During smoke, check the filter often and replace it once it looks dark brown or black, which can be well before the normal interval. Keeping spares on hand helps.

No central air? Window units and ductless mini-splits filter very little, according to EPA. In those homes, a portable HEPA air cleaner is the primary defense, even though Filterbuy doesn't sell one. Choose one whose smoke CADR is at least two-thirds of the room's square footage; a 300-square-foot bedroom needs a CADR of about 200. Skip ionizers and ozone generators, since EPA advises against air cleaners that produce ozone. HEPA belongs in portable units, never in a home HVAC slot; see HEPA vs. MERV.
