Dyson Air Purifier Filters: A Homeowner’s Guide
October 8, 2026

Is your Dyson purifier flashing a filter warning, or does the air feel stale? At Filterbuy, we’ve made pleated air filters in our own U.S. plants since 2013, and we also build HEPA-and-carbon replacement filters for select air purifiers. The questions our team hears most come down to fit and filter life, so that’s where this guide begins.
TL;DR
Most Dyson air purifiers use a sealed 360° filter that pairs glass HEPA media for particles with activated carbon for odors and gases. Dyson rates that filter for about 12 months at 12 hours a day, so if yours runs around the clock, plan on roughly six. The filters can’t be washed, and after a swap you’ll need to reset the filter light from the remote or the MyDyson app.
Key Takeaways
Dyson air purifier filters last about 12 months at 12 hours of daily use, according to Dyson support.
Dyson HEPA and carbon filters aren’t washable. Replace them instead of rinsing them.
One filter fits most current Dyson purifiers. The 360° Combi Glass HEPA + Carbon filter (part 965432-01) works in models from the TP04 and HP04 through the TP10 and HP10, plus the PH01–PH04 line.
The filter light won’t clear on its own. On many models, including the TP04 and Big+Quiet, hold Night mode on the remote for about five seconds to reset it.
What Types of Filters Do Dyson Air Purifiers Use?
Dyson air purifiers use two filter media working as a team. A pleated glass HEPA layer catches particles, while an activated carbon layer adsorbs odors and gases. On most current models, both layers share one cylindrical cartridge that wraps around the base and pulls in air from every side.
Dyson HEPA Filter: The Particle Catcher
The HEPA layer traps dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and smoke particles. Dyson rates the HEPA media in its current filters as H13 grade, capturing 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns (Dyson), which meets the EPA definition of a HEPA filter. Dyson also seals the filter into the machine so unfiltered air can’t sneak around it (Dyson).

Dyson Activated Carbon Filter: The Odor Absorber
A Dyson carbon filter picks up where HEPA leaves off. It handles cooking smells and pet odors, along with gases such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaners and new furniture. Gas molecules cling to the carbon’s porous surface, a process called adsorption, until there’s no room left. Filterbuy’s guides to activated carbon air filters and carbon vs. HEPA filters go deeper.
Combined Vs. Two-Piece Dyson Filters
Older TP04, HP04, and DP04 machines came with a two-piece, purple-and-green set. Dyson has since replaced it with an all-black, one-piece 360° Combi Glass HEPA + Carbon filter. If you’re switching, Dyson’s TP04 support page says to remove both old pieces before installing the new one.
Big+Quiet Formaldehyde models are the outlier. They use separate HEPA and carbon filters, plus a permanent formaldehyde filter (Dyson Community).
What Filterbuy Has Learned Building HEPA-And-Carbon Filters
Building our own combination filters taught us two lessons that apply to Dyson owners:
Fit matters as much as the filter material. A filter that doesn’t seal lets air slip past unfiltered.
The carbon layer usually gives out first. A smell that comes back is often your earliest clue, well before airflow drops.

How Long Do Dyson Air Purifier Filters Last?
Dyson filter life is about 12 months when the machine runs 12 hours a day, according to Dyson. That works out to roughly 4,380 hours of runtime. The reminder counts those hours, so heavy use brings the light on sooner.
Filter Life By Daily Use
Filterbuy estimate using Dyson's rating of about 12 months at 12 hours a day (roughly 4,380 hours). Smoke and heavy cooking can shorten real-world filter life.
Filterbuy’s take: trust the hour count over the calendar. The reminder tracks runtime, not how dirty your air is. In our experience, the hour rating is the honest figure, while a month estimate is only a guess about your habits. Smoke, or a spot near a kitchen or fireplace, can shorten it further (Dyson).
Big+Quiet models are the exception: Dyson rates its HEPA filter for up to five years and its carbon filter for two (Dyson Community).
What a Dyson filter costs to run
Using Dyson’s 4,380-hour rating and the $79.99 retail price of the 965432-01 Combi filter, the Filterbuy team worked out the cost:
About 1.8 cents per hour of runtime.
About 22 cents a day, or $80 a year, if it runs 12 hours a day.
About 44 cents a day, or $160 a year, if it runs around the clock.
Filterbuy’s advice: budget for filters up front and keep a spare before wildfire season.
When Should You Change Your Dyson Air Purifier Filter?
Change your Dyson air purifier filter when the filter-life indicator hits zero or when the purifier stops keeping up, whichever happens first. Watch for these signs of a clogged air purifier filter:
Odors linger after cooking or around pets, a sign the carbon is full.
Allergy symptoms creep back despite steady use.
The outer filter looks gray or dark with visible dust buildup.
You’ve had a smoke event, such as wildfire smoke or a kitchen flare-up.
How to Change a Dyson Air Purifier Filter
Swapping the filter takes about five minutes and no tools. The steps below fit most 360° Combi models, but check your manual for specifics.
Unplug the purifier. If it’s a Hot+Cool heater model, let it cool for one to two hours first, as Dyson recommends.
Remove the outer shroud. Slide the release buttons down on both sides and lift the shroud away.
Pull out the old filter. Lift it straight up and bag it right away, since it’s holding months of trapped dust. Coming from the older two-piece set? Remove both pieces.
Seat the new filter. Lower it in until it sits evenly, then press the shroud back on until it clicks. One habit from the Filterbuy team: write the install date on the new filter with a marker.
Plug in and reset the filter life using the remote (steps below).

How to Reset the Dyson Filter Light
After a swap, reset the Dyson filter replacement indicator from the remote or the MyDyson app. As Filterbuy’s support team often reminds customers, the light is a runtime timer, not a sensor, so resetting it without a new filter only silences it.

If the light stays on, reseat the filter and shroud and try again, or see our air purifier filter light troubleshooting guide.
How to Clean and Maintain a Dyson Air Purifier Filter
Dyson calls its HEPA and carbon filters non-washable, and the Washington State Department of Health warns that washing either type makes it ineffective. Keep the machine itself clean instead:
Dust and brush once a month. Wipe the shroud with a dry cloth and brush lint from the intake holes.
Clean the sensor hatch. On Link models such as the HP02, wipe out the small side hatch with a cotton swab each time you change the filter.
Running HEPA Purifiers In Every Room? Upgrade To MERV 13
If you have central heating and air and run a HEPA purifier in each room, switch your HVAC filter to MERV 13. The EPA recommends upgrading to MERV 13, or the highest rating your system’s fan and filter slot can handle, and notes many homes ship with a MERV 8 filter by default.
Each purifier cleans one room, while your HVAC system moves air through the whole house, so a MERV 13 filter catches fine particles in that shared air.
Check your system first. The EPA advises reviewing your HVAC manual or asking a technician before you upgrade.
Run the fan longer. HVAC systems only filter while the fan runs.
Find your size. Filterbuy cuts MERV 13 air filters to order in 600+ sizes, made in the USA.
Which Filter Does My Dyson Air Purifier Use?
Your model number, printed on the base sticker and shown in the MyDyson app (for example, TP07 or HP09), tells you which filter to buy.
