Every warranty below covers parts, not labor. The headline number is a ceiling, not a floor: miss the registration window and coverage drops to the base term without notice.

A brand advertises 12 years, the buyer assumes 12 years, and the coverage attached to the serial number turns out to be five. The headline figure is a ceiling, not a floor: manufacturers publish a base term that applies automatically, then layer longer terms that unlock only on conditions. Those come down to three gates, each a place where buyers lose years without anyone mentioning it.
Gate one is who installed it. Every brand here except MRCOOL requires a licensed HVAC contractor. Senville's documentation explains why: a licensed technician must evacuate and pressure-test the line set and release the refrigerant charge, and skipping that voids coverage. MRCOOL is the exception because its DIY systems ship pre-charged.
Gate two is the registration window. Daikin gives 60 days from installation, Mitsubishi Electric 90, MRCOOL 60. Miss it and the system drops to the base term without notice. Assume your installer has not handled it and ask for written confirmation before paying.
Gate three is documented maintenance. Manufacturers can request service records before approving a claim, so file annual invoices with your registration.
Two mechanics sit underneath all three. Coverage clocks start at installation, and when that date cannot be verified they start 120 days after manufacture, a rule in Senville's warranty terms. These warranties also run to the original registered owner, so they rarely follow the house, though state law overrides some of it.
Mitsubishi Electric runs the strictest tier structure in the category. Its warranty statements give every M-Series product 5 years on parts and 7 on the compressor regardless. Register inside 90 days and both climb to 10. The full 12 takes a Diamond Contractor installation on top, so the top tier depends as much on who you hire as what you buy.
Daikin has the most generous default of any professionally installed system here, and it is the number I most often concede when a buyer compares us. Its standard warranty puts single-zone equipment at 12 years on parts with registration inside 60 days, dropping to 10 for rentals and five for commercial.
MRCOOL produced the finding that changed how I wrote this page. Nearly every comparison reports the brand at 5 years on parts and 7 on the compressor and stops there, but MRCOOL's own page says that applies to DIY and Olympus alone. Advantage and Easy Pro carry 1 year and 2, so buying an Advantage to save a few hundred dollars trades away six years of coverage. Senville splits by line the same way and gets misreported the same way. AURA carries 5 years on parts and 10 on the compressor, LETO 5 on both, so the widely circulated 10-year figure leaves a LETO buyer off by five. Fujitsu runs 7 on the compressor and 5 on parts, reaching 12 with an Elite Contractor, and adds one trap: systems bought from an online retailer are not covered. LG covers qualified residential systems at 10 years on parts and compressor.

Every number so far describes the start of ownership. Nobody does the subtraction at the other end. A ductless mini split lasts 15 to 20 years with reasonable maintenance, and setting that against the coverage inverts the picture. A 5-year parts term leaves the system uncovered for 10 to 15 years, most of its working life. A registered 12-year Daikin runs bare for 3 to 8, a MRCOOL Advantage buyer for 14 to 19, and our 7-year compressor term leaves 8 to 13. That arithmetic is no kinder to us.
So the useful question is not which brand covers you longest but which leaves the smallest uncovered window. Compressors are expensive and fail late, precisely where every warranty here has run out.
Senville says flatly that it does not cover labor under any circumstances, and MRCOOL excludes the cost of diagnosing or replacing equipment. The compressor arrives free, but you still pay the service call, the diagnostic, the refrigerant recovery and recharge, and the hours to swap it. HomeAdvisor puts mini split compressor replacement at $600 to $1,000 including labor, on systems often selling for under $1,000.
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act requires any written warranty over $10 to be titled "full" or "limited," and the Federal Trade Commission states that requiring a returned registration card is an unreasonable duty a full warranty cannot impose. The FTC's sample limited warranty earns that label for two reasons: it requires registration and makes the customer pay labor. Those are the defining features of this category, ours included.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology tested a heat pump against seven common installation faults across two house types and five climate zones. Improper installation raised heating and cooling energy use on the order of 30 percent, and in the field surveys NIST reviewed, most equipment ran below its rating. That is the measured case for gating long warranties behind a trained installer.

None of this improves the air the system moves, the part of ductless ownership no warranty addresses. Every head here filters through a washable mesh screen, and the EPA states that ductless mini-split heat pumps generally do not filter fine particles. Treat that as a trade-off rather than a win: a DIY kit still needs electrical work, drainage, a wall penetration, and usually a permit, while professional installation sets the correct charge and keeps coverage intact.
