It Doesn't Stay Local

Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.

What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

TL;DR

The map above shows active fire detections and current air quality for Fayetteville and Cumberland County, North Carolina. Fayetteville's smoke season runs December through April, not summer, and most of it is planned: prescribed burns on Fort Bragg and across the Sandhills, which publishes a daily burn map. Once the AQI passes 100, close the house up, switch the thermostat fan to "On," and run a MERV 13 filter.

Key Takeaways

  • Fayetteville's smoke season runs December to April, the inverse of national wildfire advice.

  • Fort Bragg publishes a daily burn map. Check it before assuming the worst.

  • AQI 101 is the action line. Close windows and switch the thermostat fan to "On."

  • MERV 13 is what the EPA recommends for smoke, on any system that can handle it.

  • Burn season overlaps pollen season, so your filter is doing two jobs at once.

How Do I Check Fayetteville Wildfire and Smoke Conditions Right Now?

Use the live map above for current fire detections and AQI, then check the N.C. Division of Air Quality forecast for tomorrow. Where a fire sits matters less than which way the wind pushes it, so a 40-acre fire upwind can hurt your air more than a 400-acre fire downwind.

Four sources worth bookmarking:

Fayetteville's air is measured at just three Cumberland County sites. An app averaging a wide region can miss a plume over one side of town.

Why Fayetteville's Smoke Season Runs December Through April, Not Summer

Fayetteville's heaviest smoke months are December through April, the inverse of the June-to-September window national guidance assumes. N.C. DAQ reports that prescribed fire season in North Carolina peaks in February and March. The state's spring wildfire season runs from mid-March to mid-April, with a second season in October, and Fort Bragg's forestry program burns December through June. July and August are the quiet months.

Fort Bragg alone burns roughly 55,000 acres a year under the state's Smoke Management Program, certified to the EPA in February 2025. Controlled, but still putting fine particles over the city on a southwest wind.

Two other sources matter. Debris burning is the leading cause of wildfires in North Carolina, and an open burning permit is required within 500 feet of protected woodland. Long-range transport shows up occasionally, as in the 2023 Canadian episodes. A clear fire map does not mean clear air here.

“

Fayetteville made me rebuild our template. Every smoke guide I'd read, including ones I'd written, assumed summer. Then I pulled the burn calendars and realized we'd have been telling Cumberland County families to prepare in June, months after their worst air had gone.

What Does Today's AQI Number Mean for Cumberland County?

The Air Quality Index runs 0 to 500 and turns daily air pollution into a color you can act on. AQI 101 is your action line: at Orange and above, close up and run continuous filtration.

  • 0 to 50, Green. Normal routine.

  • 51 to 100, Yellow. Anyone with asthma, COPD, or a heart condition should ease up on hard outdoor exertion.

  • 101 to 150, Orange. Kids, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with lung or heart disease should limit time outside.

  • 151 to 200, Red. Everyone feels it. Move activities indoors.

  • 201 to 300, Purple. Stay inside with a well-filtered clean room.

  • 301+, Maroon. Emergency conditions. Follow public health guidance.

N.C. DAQ notes wildfires release considerably more PM2.5 than prescribed burns, so a wildfire day loads your filter far harder than a Fort Bragg burn day reading the same Orange.

What Should I Do Inside My Home When Smoke Reaches Fayetteville?

Close the house, run your HVAC fan continuously, and filter the air already inside. Your central system moves far more air than any portable unit, making it your strongest tool when set up correctly.

  1. Close windows and doors, and switch the fresh-air intake to recirculate.

  2. Move the thermostat fan from "Auto" to "On." EPA guidance notes that a high-efficiency filter plus a continuous fan can cut indoor PM2.5 by roughly half.

  3. Install a MERV 13 filter if your system can take one.

  4. Set up one clean room, usually the bedroom, with a portable HEPA cleaner. Our guide to running an air purifier during wildfire season covers sizing.

  5. Skip candles, gas-stove frying, and vacuuming while conditions are bad.

Which Air Filter Should I Use During a Fayetteville Smoke Event?

The EPA recommends a MERV 13 or higher filter during smoky periods, provided your system can take it, and you replace it frequently. MERV 8 handles dust and pollen but does little against fine smoke particles. MERV 11 is a solid everyday upgrade and the right call when an older system cannot manage MERV 13. MERV 13 captures at least half of the smallest particles tested, putting it in PM2.5 territory. See MERV 13 vs HEPA.

A filter that normally lasts 60 to 90 days can load up within weeks under heavy smoke. Inspect it every week or two and swap it when the media looks dark, airflow feels weak, or it smells like smoke.

What If You Rent or Live in On-Post Housing?

You can almost always change the filter yourself, even when you cannot touch anything else. In most leases, it is a tenant-replaceable consumable, and a better filter in an existing slot needs no permission.

  • Measure before you buy. Rentals and older Fayetteville housing run odd sizes. Filterbuy makes over 600 standard sizes plus custom cuts for returns that match nothing on a store shelf.

  • In on-post housing, filter changes usually go through a work order. Submit it before December, not during a wildfire smoke event.

  • Leave ductwork and vents alone. A stuck intake is a maintenance request.

  • A portable HEPA cleaner is yours and moves with you at the next PCS.

What If You Can't Buy Anything This Week?

Four free steps do most of the work: close the windows, switch the thermostat fan to "On" so the filter you own keeps working, pick one room to keep shut, and skip candles, frying, and vacuuming.

If you can spare a little, EPA research on DIY air cleaners found that taping a single 4-inch MERV 13 filter to a box fan raised clean-air delivery by 123%. EPA cautions that box fans can overheat with a filter attached, so never run a DIY unit unattended or overnight. It does not have to be a Filterbuy filter. Any MERV 13 will do.

“

Smoke-event calls are rarely about which filter to buy. They're 'the system runs constantly, and it still smells like a campfire.' Nine times out of ten, it's a fresh-air intake nobody closed, or a filter loose in an oversized slot so air slips around it. Fix the bypass before you upgrade the MERV. A snug MERV 11 beats a rattling MERV 13.

Supporting Statistics

  1. Asthma ER visits ran 17% above expected on smoke days. CDC tracked emergency department visits nationwide during the 2023 Canadian smoke episodes and found that across the 19 smoke days studied, defined by an AQI of 101 or higher, asthma visits ran 17% higher than expected. That threshold is why we tell customers to act at Orange rather than wait for Red.

  1. The Southeast does most of America's burning. Thirteen southeastern states,  including North Carolina, accounted for 59% of all acres subject to prescribed fire nationwide in 2019, which is why your smoke is likelier to be local and planned than Western and catastrophic.

  1. Fayetteville's air is good, but not immune. The American Lung Association's 2026 "State of the Air" report ranks the Fayetteville-Lumberton-Pinehurst metro 154th worst nationally for short-term particle pollution, a grade of B, on 2022 to 2024 data. Most days here are fine, which means a handful of spike days do nearly all the damage.
