Why Your Dealer Says 15,000 Miles When Your Manual Does Not

The 15,000-mile figure on most dealer service pages is a service-network guideline rather than a universal published interval. It is a reasonable midpoint across a lineup, and it is easy to communicate at a service desk. It is not what every manufacturer prints in the maintenance schedule for a specific model and model year.

Toyota is the clearest example. Dealer service pages across the country cite 15,000 miles, while Toyota's late-model Camry schedules list 10,000 miles or 12 months, and only one of those is the published interval for that vehicle.

Honda is the sharpest departure, putting no normal-condition cabin filter mileage in the schedule at all. The owner's manual instead tells you to replace the dust and pollen filter when Maintenance Minder displays subitem 2, which the vehicle calculates from driving data rather than a fixed odometer reading.

The practical consequence is that a Honda owner following a generic 15,000-mile rule is following Honda's severe-service footnote as though it were the normal schedule.

So Honda owners read a code rather than an odometer. Maintenance Minder shows a letter for the oil service and numbers for everything else, and the number that matters here is 2, which covers the engine air cleaner and the dust and pollen filter together. Severe conditions are more common than the label suggests. Ford names dirt roads, dusty conditions, and heavily polluted areas. Hyundai counts more than half of driving in heavy city traffic in hot weather. A commuter in stop-and-go metro traffic meets at least one manufacturer's severe definition.

Wildfire smoke is the condition none of these schedules were written for, and no manufacturer reviewed here lists smoke exposure as a trigger, so owners in affected regions are better served treating the published interval as a ceiling than a target.

Nissan's published maintenance schedule is the outlier that proves the point, listing the same 15,000 miles or 12 months whether the conditions are standard or severe.
