What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

Bellevue usually breathes clean Pacific air, but easterly winds can push wildfire smoke over the Cascades and into the Eastside. This guide from Filterbuy, an air filter manufacturer, covers what to do inside your home once the Bellevue AQI reaches 100.

TL;DR

Most wildfire smoke reaches Bellevue on easterly wind days in late summer and September. Use the live map for fires and smoke plumes, and AirNow for the current AQI and PM2.5, the fine particles in smoke. At AQI 100, Filterbuy's action line, put a MERV 13 filter in your HVAC, set the fan to On, run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and close up the house.

Key Takeaways

  • Filterbuy's review of six years of Puget Sound Clean Air Agency reports found the two worst smoke seasons, 2020 and 2022, peaked in September or October.

  • Regional air quality alerts start at AQI 101, one step after Filterbuy's AQI 100 action line, so waiting for an alert means acting late.

  • The EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoke and says most home systems can accommodate it with frequent replacement.

  • Homes without ductwork should rely on portable HEPA air cleaners, and a 300-square-foot bedroom needs a smoke CADR of about 200.

How To Check Live Bellevue Wildfire And Smoke Conditions Right Now

Check the live map at the top of this page for active fires and smoke plumes, then search your Bellevue ZIP code on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map for hourly PM2.5 from nearby monitors and sensors.

For incident details, the National Interagency Fire Center fire information page links to InciWeb updates for large fires. The National Weather Service Seattle forecast office shows when easterly winds are coming.

Why Wildfire Smoke Reaches Bellevue On Easterly Wind Days

Wildfire smoke reaches Bellevue when offshore winds reverse the usual Pacific flow and pull air west over the Cascades. State forecasters say these easterly events are more common in September, and long fall nights trap the smoke near the ground until afternoon.

In September 2020, easterly winds carried smoke into King County overnight on September 8, and the City of Bellevue reported unhealthy to very unhealthy air for days, including an AQI of 174 on September 17, in its September 2020 smoke update.

Smoke also moves along Interstate 5, so compare the Filterbuy Seattle wildfire and smoke map across Lake Washington and the Washington wildfire and smoke map for the statewide picture.

Table 1. Puget Sound Wildfire Smoke Seasons, 2020 To 2026

Year Smoke Reported Worst Level
2020 Record fine particle levels in September Very Unhealthy
2021 Every monitoring site in August Unhealthy
2022 6 days in September, 19 in October Hazardous
2023 Five days in August Unhealthy
2024 None None
2025 Three days Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
2026 Early August alert, season ongoing Pending

Two patterns stand out: the worst seasons peaked in September or October, and quiet years such as 2024 and 2025 mislead. Filterbuy's advice for Eastside homes is to get filters in and spares on the shelf by Labor Day.

What Each Bellevue AQI Level Means For Your Home

At AQI 100, Filterbuy recommends MERV 13 in the HVAC, the thermostat fan set to On, a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, and the house closed up. PM2.5 drives the 0 to 500 AQI scale during smoke, and 100 is still the top of Moderate, so this is where we tell customers to move before orange begins. The category names and colors come from the EPA. For daily readings, follow our live Bellevue air quality index map.

Acting at 100 matters because the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issues alerts once AQI reaches 101, so an alert on your phone means Bellevue has already passed Filterbuy's line.

Public Health Seattle and King County sets the same marker in its wildfire smoke preparedness guide, advising children, adults over 65, pregnant people, and people with heart or lung conditions to stay indoors at AQI 100 and above and to follow their doctor's advice.

Table 2. Bellevue AQI Categories And What To Do

AQI EPA Category Color What To Do
0–50 Good Green Keep your normal filter routine.
51–100 Moderate Yellow Get MERV 13 in before smoke arrives and keep spares. Act at 100.
101–150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Orange MERV 13, fan on, a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, house closed up.
151–200 Unhealthy Red Hold all four steps. Inspect the filter more often and keep replacements on hand.
201–300 Very Unhealthy Purple Follow AirNow and local guidance first. Keep all four steps, with the bedroom as a clean room. Filtration is one layer.
301 and above Hazardous Maroon Follow local authorities first, including any advice to leave. The four steps support that guidance.

Categories, ranges, and colors are the EPA's. The AQI 100 action line is a Filterbuy house rule.

The Four-Step Filterbuy Action Rule When Bellevue AQI Reaches 100

At AQI 100, check AirNow and any Puget Sound Clean Air Agency or King County guidance first, then take these four steps together.

  1. Put a MERV 13 filter in your HVAC system, the whole-home layer.

  2. Set the thermostat fan from Auto to On so the system filters continuously.

  3. Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. It treats that room harder than the central system can.

  4. Close the house up. Shut windows, doors, and the fireplace damper, and skip candles, frying, smoking, and vacuuming without a sealed unit. Filterbuy's guide on how to keep wildfire smoke out of your house covers door gaps.

The EPA recommends a high-efficiency filter rated MERV 13 or higher in a central system during smoke, according to its guidance on preparing for smoke and heat. It notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate MERV 13 without equipment problems, provided the filter is replaced often. The agency's indoor air filtration guidance also advises running the system fan as often as you can.

The filter and the air cleaner are two layers doing different jobs, so a ducted home needs both. Run the bedroom unit overnight, when smoke tends to settle.

During smoke, check the filter often and replace it when it looks dirty, dark brown, or black. That can come well before the normal interval, so keep spares on hand. Filterbuy's comparison of MERV 13 versus HEPA for wildfire smoke explains why HEPA belongs only in portable units.

Fit matters too. Filterbuy cuts every filter a half inch under nominal size, so a 20x25x1 measures 19.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 inches, and depth is the dimension our manufacturing team sees ordered wrong most often. See our guide on how to measure your air filter.

“

The question I get most is which MERV to buy. The one to ask first is whether the filter you are holding actually fills the slot. A rating describes the media, not the gap around it.

No Ductwork? How To Filter Smoke In A Bellevue Apartment Or Condo

Without ductwork, portable HEPA air cleaners are the primary defense, so run one in each occupied room, starting with the bedroom. That applies to many Bellevue apartments and condos, along with homes heated by baseboard or wall units.

Table 3. Match The Setup To Your Bellevue Home

Home Type Whole Home Each Occupied Room
House with ducts MERV 13, fan On Portable HEPA air cleaner
Condo or apartment with ducts MERV 13 if you can change the filter Portable HEPA air cleaner
Baseboard or wall heat No duct system to filter Portable HEPA air cleaner as the primary defense
No portable unit yet MERV 13 if ducted DIY box fan with a MERV 13 filter as a stopgap

Filterbuy house recommendation. Start with bedrooms.

Here, Filterbuy's advice runs against its own product line. We make HVAC filters and do not sell portable air cleaners, and when we priced both, a MERV 13 filter cost about 3 to 12 cents per square foot over a 90-day smoke season, versus about $1.07 for one bedroom purifier in year one. Our portable air purifier versus HVAC filter cost comparison shows the math, but without ducts, the purifier comes first.

Size each unit by its smoke CADR. The EPA calls for at least two-thirds of the floor area, so a 300-square-foot bedroom needs about 200, and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers suggests matching the full room area for wildfire smoke. Its AHAM Verifide directory of certified room air cleaners lists tested ratings.

If you cannot get a portable unit, the EPA describes a DIY air cleaner built from a certified box fan made in 2012 or later and a MERV 13 filter. Never leave it unattended, and treat it as a stopgap until you buy a certified air cleaner.

Avoid ionizers, ozone generators, and other air cleaners that produce ozone, which the EPA advises against. Choose a mechanical unit from the CARB-certified air cleaner list.

“

After years of manufacturing air filters, the lesson I would pass on to Bellevue families is simple: prepare before the smoke arrives. Check your filter size and keep a MERV 13 in that size on the shelf before the September east winds.
