MERV 13 is the top of our range, and it's the tier we point to for smoke. Your 16x32x2 measures 15.75 x 31.75 x 1.75 inches, which is smaller than the name on purpose, because that clearance is what lets it slide into the slot. Before you switch to any new rating, check your HVAC manual for compatibility, the same way you'd confirm a size.

If the manual isn't handy, your HVAC professional can tell you. For anything health-related, ask a qualified professional rather than a filter label.
Your filter should measure about 15.75 x 31.75 x 1.75 inches. That isn't a mistake. Nominal size, 16x32x2, is the ordering name. The actual cut is smaller by design, and that clearance is what makes it fit.

Round each one up to the nearest whole number. That's your nominal size.
