A 14x18x1 air filter is a one-inch pleated panel that fits a 14-by-18-inch return. The label is the nominal size. The filter itself is cut a little smaller, and that clearance is what lets it slide in and seal.
MERV 8 is the standard choice for most homes. MERV 11 suits allergy sufferers. MERV 13 is our optimal tier. Odor Eliminator uses carbon for odors.
Your HVAC manual lists the MERV your system is set up for. Check it once and you're done.
True HEPA isn't made in a one-inch panel, whatever a listing says.
Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Target and Amazon all stock 14x18x1, usually in basic grades only.
A 14x18x1 air filter is a one-inch-deep pleated panel sized for a 14-by-18-inch return air opening. A furnace and an air conditioner share the same return, so a furnace filter and an air conditioner filter 14x18x1 are the same product. The pleats trap dust, pollen, dander, mold spores and smoke as air passes through.
Pleating is what does the work. A Filterbuy 14x18x1 pleated air filter folds several times more material into the same frame than flat fiberglass does, so it holds more before it needs changing. Our guide to pleated vs fiberglass filters covers the difference.
Finding your size is usually a ten-second job. Pull the old filter out and read the frame edge, where the size is printed. If it says 14x18x1, that's what you order.
If the printing has worn off, measure the old filter and round up to the nearest inch. No old filter? Measure the slot opening instead, since slots are cut to the nominal size. And if your size isn't listed anywhere, we cut custom sizes to the eighth of an inch, so you're covered either way.
A Filterbuy 14x18x1 measures 13.50 x 17.50 x 0.75 inches. Filters are ordered by nominal size, rounded up, then cut a little smaller so they slide into the slot without binding. That clearance is deliberate, and every manufacturer chooses its own, which is why two filters labelled 14x18x1 can measure differently.
All four fit a 14x18x1 return. We publish the row where our cut is the smallest of the four, because you can't check a fit nobody told you about. If your current filter sits well, match its measured dimensions rather than the label alone.

MPR and FPR are rating systems run by other companies, not by us. They're listed here so you can match what you're used to seeing on a shelf.
Odor Eliminator is our carbon grade, built for odors rather than for a MERV step up. If cooking, pets or smoke smells are the reason you're shopping, that's the one.
Check your HVAC manual before you choose a MERV. It lists what your system is set up for, and it takes about as long as confirming the size. Treat it as part of the same fit check.
MERV 11 is our Superior tier and the one we list for allergy sufferers. It captures 95% of airborne particles, including pollen, pet dander and mold spores.
The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology suggests a disposable filter in the MERV 11 to 13 range for whole-house filtration. If you're managing a diagnosed allergy or asthma, your doctor is the right person to ask about what will help.
During pollen season, plenty of people change the filter every 30 to 45 days instead of every 90. Check your HVAC manual for the MERV your system is set up for.
Every brand below makes a real 14x18x1 filter. What differs is which grades come in this size, how the frame is built, and what you'll pay across a year.

You can buy a 14x18x1 air filter nearby today. Home Depot stocks HDX pleated filters, Lowe's and Target carry Filtrete, the 14x18x1 air filter Walmart sells is usually the basic MPR 300, and the 14x18x1 air filter Amazon lists comes from Filtrete or Filterbuy.
What a local shelf rarely carries is MERV 13 or a carbon odor filter in this size, so those grades are mostly online purchases.

No. HEPA is a separate standard from MERV, and it isn't manufactured in a one-inch panel like this one. The EPA describes HEPA as a format used in portable air cleaners rather than in central heating and cooling systems.
Listings that say "HEPA-type" or "99% HEPA" in a one-inch size are not HEPA filters. The Allergy & Asthma Network points out that the "HEPA-like" label doesn't mean anything in particular.
For a central system, our MERV 13 is the optimal tier and captures 98% of airborne particles. Check your HVAC manual for the MERV your system is set up for. If you want HEPA in one room, a portable air cleaner is the product that does that job.
Washable 14x18x1 filters do exist. K&N and several aluminium-frame brands make them, and they're rated lower than our pleated grades, so they capture less.
Filterbuy doesn't make a washable filter in this size. The ACAAI notes that permanent filters are very hard to clean thoroughly, and a filter put back while it's still damp is a problem you don't want sitting in your ductwork. Washables suit a garage or a workshop, where the debris is coarse and cleaning is easy to keep up with. For a house, a pleated filter on auto-delivery is less to think about.
Installing a 14x18x1 air filter takes about two minutes, and the arrow is the part people get wrong.
Switch the system off at the thermostat. Off, not Fan.
Find the filter slot. It's behind the return air grille, or beside the blower.
Check which way the arrow points before you throw the old filter away. Filterbuy prints it along the frame edge.
Read the size on the old frame. It should say 14x18x1. If it says something else, order what it says.
Slide the new filter in with the arrow pointing the same way, toward the air handler and away from the return duct.
Close the cover or grille fully so nothing slips past the edges.
Switch the system back on and write the date on the frame in marker.
Most homes are on a 90-day cycle. With pets, 60 days is more typical, and during heavy pollen season plenty of people go to 30 or 45.
