Most homes that smell like smoke after a wildfire do not need duct cleaning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) endorses it only when there is a real, visible problem, and while NADCA does count fire and smoke damage as a trigger, it means contamination you can verify rather than smoke that drifted through your neighborhood. Start with a fresh filter and a ventilation flush instead, which costs under $60 and resolves most cases.
EPA does not recommend duct cleaning as routine maintenance. It calls for cleaning as-needed only, and states there is no evidence that a light amount of dust in ducts poses a health risk.
NADCA's ACR Standard (2025 Edition) lists fire and smoke contamination as a condition determining the need for HVAC cleaning. So post-wildfire duct cleaning is a real service, not a scam. The question is whether your system qualifies.
Professional duct cleaning costs $450 to $1,000 per heating and cooling system, per EPA and NADCA's homeowner guidance at Breathing Clean. Quotes under $200 for a "whole house special" are a documented bait tactic.
Duct cleaning rarely fixes wildfire smoke odor. CIRES researchers at CU Boulder found a smoke-hit home absorbed VOCs like a sponge and re-released them for weeks.
The cheap first step is a fresh MERV 11–13 filter plus a ventilation flush, replaced monthly until the odor clears. That is what public health agencies advised after the Marshall Fire and the 2025 Los Angeles fires.
Smoke reaching your neighborhood is not the same thing as smoke contaminating your duct system, and the difference is worth about a thousand dollars. If your HVAC ran during the event your ducts moved smoky air, but most of that PM2.5 went into your filter, through your rooms, and back out again. What justifies a cleaning is soot and ash visibly settled inside the ductwork, on the blower, or on the coil, and you can check for that yourself in about 20 minutes.
Smoke in the air is a filtration problem, while smoke deposited in the system is a cleaning problem, and the two carry wildly different price tags.
So the question Filterbuy built this guide around is not "should I clean my ducts?" but where the smoke actually ended up. There are three possible answers, each with a different fix:

Read side by side, these positions are not actually in conflict. EPA is saying prove there is a problem, and NADCA is saying here is what counts as one. Both land in the same place: verify the contamination before you pay for it.
This costs nothing, takes 20 minutes, and leaves you with evidence rather than a guess. Turn the system off before you start.
Pull the filter. If it has gone gray or black, or smells like a campfire, it did its job. That is smoke captured at the filter, which tells you there was a filtration event and not necessarily a contaminated duct. Photograph it before you throw it out.
Open two registers and look inside. Take off one supply register near the air handler and one at the far end of the house, shine a flashlight in, and wipe the duct wall with a white cloth. LA County Public Health relies on the same wipe test, so you are not improvising. Light gray dust is ordinary household soil, but black, greasy residue that smears is a contamination signal.
Inspect the blower and coil. Open the air handler cabinet and look for ash on the blower wheel, a soot film across the coil, or a gray coating on the filter housing. Any of those means smoke settled inside the equipment itself, which is the strongest case you can make for professional cleaning.
Scoring it: with zero or one signal, start with filter-and-flush and save your money. With two or three, especially soot on the blower or coil, it is worth getting NADCA-certified quotes.
What this check can't tell you. EPA points out that many sections of a heating and cooling system are not accessible for visual inspection. Two clean registers do not prove the whole run is clean, and nothing a flashlight reveals rules out mold inside insulated duct, which only lab analysis confirms. Treat the check as reliable for telling you when you don't need to spend money, and weaker as proof that all is well. If someone in the house has asthma and their symptoms persist, stop troubleshooting ductwork and talk to their doctor.
Four credible sources give sound advice that quietly conflicts on timing. Your insurer wants documentation before anything is disturbed, LA County says not to run the HVAC while ash is still on surfaces, EPA says gather three estimates, and this page tells you to run the fan. In the wrong order you either destroy your own evidence or blow soot across rooms you just cleaned. The sequence that satisfies all four:
Document before you touch anything. Photograph the surfaces, registers, filter, and air handler, because cleaning destroys the evidence and takes part of your claim with it.
Leave the system off while visible ash remains indoors. Treat this as the entry condition for everything below, since running the fan now only spreads particulate onto the surfaces you are about to clean.
Clean surfaces first: damp cloth, HEPA vacuum, no dry sweeping.
Then run filter-and-flush, below.
Wait two to four weeks before deciding on duct cleaning. Smoke VOCs fall off substantially across roughly five weeks, and deciding inside that window is exactly how people end up paying for a cleaning and still smelling smoke.
If signals persist, get three NADCA-certified quotes, and call your adjuster before scheduling, not after.
Once step 2 above is satisfied and no visible ash remains indoors, start here. This is what public health officials told residents after Colorado's Marshall Fire and the January 2025 Eaton and Palisades fires.
Install a fresh high-efficiency filter. LA County advised MERV 13 or higher on recirculate; Colorado's guidance called for MERV 11 or 12 with slot gaps sealed. Use the highest rating your system will tolerate, since a filter your blower cannot pull air through helps nobody. Seal the gaps. Air slipping around the filter never got filtered, so foam weatherstripping or tape around the slot edges counts as a real upgrade.
Run the fan continuously by switching the thermostat from "AUTO" to "ON" for several days, which gives the filter repeated passes at the same air.
Ventilate once outdoor air is clean. Open the windows and keep the house warm, since warmth speeds up the off-gassing of absorbed smoke compounds.

Four situations justify the expense:
Visible soot or ash inside the ductwork, blower, or coil, which is NADCA's fire and smoke condition.
Your home was in or beside the burn zone, where wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires produce ash carrying heavy metals and combustion byproducts.
Water intrusion accompanied the fire, whether from suppression efforts or a compromised roof, because wet ash sitting against duct liner is a mold risk on a 24–48 hour clock.
Debris is visibly blowing out of your registers, an EPA-named trigger.
Ten days after the 2021 Marshall Fire, scientists at CIRES and CU Boulder set up instruments in a surviving home in Superior, Colorado and sampled its air for five weeks. Aromatic VOCs like benzene and naphthalene ran far higher indoors than out, comparable to urban Los Angeles on a high-pollution day in the 1990s. The house had absorbed those compounds during the fire and kept releasing them for weeks afterward, most likely from reservoirs like drywall and wood.
Their mitigation testing found that opening windows and running activated-carbon air cleaners each cut average indoor VOC levels by more than 50% while active, though levels rebounded as soon as the fans stopped.
That is row three. The odor is coming from your walls, your framing, and your soft furnishings, none of which a duct cleaning crew ever touches. Activated-carbon filtration helps because carbon adsorbs gases, whereas a pleated filter catches particles no matter how high its MERV rating goes. What to require: membership you have confirmed yourself in NADCA's Find a Professional directory, an ASCS-certified technician on the crew, source removal using HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment, a written scope that names the coil and blower explicitly, and before-and-after photos. A real single-system job runs several hours rather than 45 minutes.

It depends on whether ash settled indoors. If there is visible soot or ash on your surfaces, LA County Public Health advises leaving the system off until the bulk has been cleaned up, since running it spreads particulate back onto surfaces you already cleaned. If your home only took in smoky outdoor air with no visible deposits, run it with a fresh high-efficiency filter and the slot sealed.
Not really, and the failure mode is worse than doing nothing. EPA warns that an inadequate vacuum collection system can release more dust and contaminants than leaving the ducts alone, and that an untrained operator can damage the ductwork or the system itself. Inspecting is a DIY job. Source removal is not.
They do different jobs and work well together. EPA reports that portable air cleaners fitted with high-efficiency filters can cut indoor particle concentrations by as much as 85%, and they can run continuously at lower cost than a central system. The furnace filter treats the whole house; the portable treats the room you are actually sitting in.

Yes. Flexible duct and fiberglass liner are porous, harder to clean without damaging them, and more likely to hold odor, and NADCA treats deteriorating liner as a trigger by itself. Sometimes replacement makes more sense than cleaning.

MERV. Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, the 1–16 scale rating how effectively a filter captures airborne particles. Higher numbers catch smaller particles.
PM2.5. Fine particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or smaller, the main health-relevant pollutant in wildfire smoke.
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Carbon-based gases released by combustion and by materials that absorbed them. They cause most lingering smoke odor indoors.
Source removal. NADCA's recognized method: dislodging debris while the system is under negative pressure from a HEPA vacuum.
WUI (Wildland-Urban Interface) fire. A fire where development meets wildland, burning structures and vehicles and producing ash unlike vegetation smoke.

A filter is the cheapest useful move after a smoke event, and it is still not the answer to a smoke smell. Pleated media captures particles, but the odor is gas, and no MERV rating fixes that, ours included.
