How a Butterfly's Drinking Habit Could Lead to Cheaper Air Quality Monitors

Researchers studying how butterflies drink nectar have developed a coin-sized device that could make air pollution monitoring far cheaper and easier to deploy — no battery or pump required.

What did researchers discover?

A team studying a butterfly's proboscis, the long, straw-like mouthpart it uses to drink nectar, used X-rays to examine how it works. They found a thin film of liquid becomes trapped inside the tube; as the film thins, it eventually bursts, releasing energy that pushes the remaining liquid through. The entire process happens in milliseconds, with no motor or battery involved.

How does that lead to an air quality device?

Researchers from a university in China used that same mechanism to build a coin-sized device that captures airborne material in a thin liquid film. When the film bursts, it pushes the captured sample through small channels toward a testing area, with no external power source needed. The team estimates each disposable unit could cost as little as $0.12, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

What could it be used for?

Because the device works even in strong airflow, researchers say it could be mounted on drones to monitor airborne pesticides over farmland. In testing for the virus that causes COVID-19, the device was 100 times more sensitive than a conventional air sampler. Researchers say it could eventually help monitor air pollution, pesticides, and infectious disease more broadly.

Is this something people will see soon?

Not yet. The technology is still at the research stage and needs further testing before it could be used routinely. For context, the UK alone currently relies on more than 1,500 air quality monitoring sites that depend on batteries, motors, or pumps — the kind of infrastructure this device is designed to replace.
