Researchers say they've identified chemical changes in the blood that could help explain how air pollution contributes to lung cancer — a connection scientists have long observed but struggled to explain at the biological level.
A team from Emory University, the American Cancer Society, and international collaborators studied blood samples from more than 1,300 people, collected years before any of them were diagnosed with cancer. The participants came from two long-running US cancer studies. Researchers measured over 1,100 different chemicals, called metabolites, in each blood sample and compared them against estimated pollution levels — including fine particulate matter, ozone, and traffic-related emissions — near each person's home at the time.
Some participants went on to develop lung cancer years later. Comparing their blood chemistry to that of people who stayed cancer-free, researchers identified eight metabolites linked to both pollution exposure and future lung cancer risk, four of which appeared to actively help explain the connection between certain pollutants and the disease. Several of the flagged chemicals relate to the body's antioxidant defenses and inflammation response, suggesting pollution may contribute to cancer risk partly by overwhelming the body's ability to counter oxidative stress. The results held up even after accounting for smoking status.
The researchers themselves describe the findings as hypothesis-generating rather than definitive proof, and note the study population was mostly older and white, meaning more research is needed across more diverse groups. They say the long-term goal is to help doctors eventually flag people at higher pollution-related risk before disease develops, and to identify new targets for prevention. This is exploratory science, not a clinical test or diagnostic tool — anyone with questions about personal cancer risk should talk to a physician.
Studies like this reinforce a broader point: the fine particulate matter found in outdoor air pollution, including traffic emissions and wildfire smoke, doesn't stay outside. It moves indoors too, particularly during high-pollution events.
