How to Read AQI

The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures how polluted the air is and how it may affect your health.

0–50 (Good): Air quality is satisfactory.

51–100 (Moderate): Acceptable, but some pollutants may pose minor concerns.

101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)

151–200 (Unhealthy)

201–300 (Very Unhealthy)

TL;DR

The live AQI map above shows current air quality in Oxnard, California, from Ventura County and EPA monitors. At Filterbuy, we see Oxnard as a smoke city rather than a smog city. The ocean breeze carries ozone inland, so most days are clean, and the bad ones arrive when Santa Ana winds push wildfire smoke to the coast.

Key Takeaways

  • Filterbuy's action line for particles is AQI 100: MERV 13, fan On, a portable HEPA cleaner in each occupied room, and the house closed up.

  • Ventura County is a Serious ozone nonattainment area, but coastal Oxnard rarely exceeds the standard.

  • The nearest regulatory monitor sits in El Rio, on Oxnard's northern edge.

  • Wildfire smoke moves Oxnard's AQI most, usually on Santa Ana wind days.

  • Diesel soot near the Port of Hueneme is the local wildcard.

How to Read the Oxnard AQI Map Above

The Oxnard AQI on the map is a 0 to 500 score for whichever pollutant is highest at the monitor you select. Before acting on it, run the three-question check Filterbuy built for the Oxnard coast:

  1. Which pollutant? PM2.5 means smoke particles a filter can catch. Ozone is a gas: close up and wait.

  2. Which way is the wind? Onshore usually means clean air, while offshore Santa Anas can bring smoke.

  3. Which monitor? Use El Rio for official readings and the port-area soot stations for diesel.

The official reading comes from the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District (VCAPCD) station at Rio Mesa High School in El Rio. Hourly AQI uses NowCast, which smooths sudden jumps, so smoke can reach your nose first. If you smell smoke while the map reads Good, close the windows anyway.

What Each AQI Level Means on the Oxnard Plain

Oxnard AQI Levels and What to Do

AQI Range Category What It Usually Looks Like in Oxnard What to Do
0–50 Good Marine layer day, the usual pattern Open windows and air out the house
51–100 Moderate Warm afternoon or field dust Fine for most; get MERV 13 in before smoke arrives
101–150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Smoke from a regional fire Sensitive groups limit exertion; MERV 13, fan On, HEPA in each occupied room, close up
151–200 Unhealthy Santa Ana smoke over the coast Everyone limits exertion; keep all four steps and inspect the filter often
201–300 Very Unhealthy Dense smoke from a nearby fire Follow AirNow and VCAPCD guidance; keep the four steps and use a clean room
301–500 Hazardous Rare Follow VCAPCD and county guidance first

Ranges and category names follow the EPA Air Quality Index. Filterbuy's action line is AQI 100, the top of Moderate.

Ozone falls after sunset, but smoke does not, so a smoke reading at dinnertime can still be there at bedtime.

Is It Safe to Be Outside in Oxnard Today?

Whether Oxnard's air is safe depends on the AQI and who is asking. Sensitive groups (children, adults over 65, pregnant people, and anyone with asthma, COPD, or heart disease) should cut back at 101, and everyone at 151. These thresholds follow EPA's AQI guidance, as our guide to the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category explains. Anyone with asthma, COPD, or heart disease should also follow their doctor's advice.

Outdoor workers have a firmer line: Cal/OSHA requires employers to provide N95s once smoke pushes the AQI to 151. VCAPCD's state filing also shows higher asthma rates in Oxnard's 93030 ZIP code, so an orange day reaches many households there.

Where Oxnard Gets Its Forecast and Smoke Alerts

Ventura County's air district (VCAPCD) posts a daily air quality and agricultural burn forecast by zone, and Oxnard sits in its Coastal Plain zone. During fires, check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map or CARB's Smoke Spotter app, and use the California statewide AQI map to see where a plume is heading.

Farmworkers can join the Farmworker Wildfire Smoke Alert by texting SMOKE (English) or HUMO (Spanish) to 855-522-0034, with Mixteco and Zapoteco audio. Alerts go out when smoke pushes the AQI to 151.

Diesel Soot Near the Port and Highway 101

The Port of Hueneme runs on diesel ships and trucks, as do nearby farms and warehouses. Diesel exhaust carries black carbon, a component of PM2.5, and the My Oxnard Air black carbon network measures it at four stations: La Colonia, Rice Avenue by Highway 101, Haycox Elementary, and the Port of Hueneme gate.

Its index compares each hour with typical local levels rather than health categories. In Filterbuy's view, homes near the port or a truck route need filtration all year, beyond smoke season. Keep windows closed at rush hour, and our guide to filters for homes near ports and highways covers the rest.

What's in Oxnard's Air, Season by Season

Oxnard's air problems take turns, so we mapped each to its usual season. Wildfire smoke and diesel soot are PM2.5. Ozone forms in sunlight, but the sea breeze pushes it inland, so the federal standard is rarely exceeded on the coastal plain. Field dust (PM10) keeps the county above the state PM10 standard (see our PM10 vs. PM2.5 guide).

The Oxnard Air Year: What to Watch and When

Season Main Concern What Drives It What to Do
Winter Diesel soot, smoke Night inversions trap soot; Santa Anas still possible Close up on still nights near truck routes
Spring Field dust (PM10) Wind over worked fields; marine layer keeps air mild Open windows most days; skip windy afternoons
Summer Ozone, mostly inland Sea breeze carries smog toward Simi Valley and Ojai Coast is usually fine; exercise early inland
Fall Wildfire smoke Santa Ana winds reverse the ocean breeze Stock a MERV 13 spare by September

How Oxnard Stacks Up Against Inland Ventura County

Coastal Oxnard has lower ozone than inland Ventura County, so the countywide label doesn't fit the coast. A 2018 VCAPCD state filing listed Oxnard's ozone design value at 61 ppb and Simi Valley's at 77 ppb.

Coastal Oxnard vs. Inland Ventura County Ozone

Area Ozone Picture What It Means for Residents
Oxnard (coastal plain) 61 ppb; rarely over the standard Smoke drives most bad days
Simi Valley (inland) 77 ppb; above the 70 ppb standard Summer ozone afternoons
All of Ventura County Serious nonattainment; attainment due August 3, 2027 Rules apply countywide

Sources: VCAPCD AB 617 submittal to CARB (2018); CARB Resolution 23-1.

The county logged six days over the federal ozone standard in 2025, its lowest count to date.

Santa Ana Smoke: What Moves Oxnard's AQI Fastest

Santa Ana winds, which typically blow between September and May, reverse the ocean breeze and push hot, dry air and smoke to the Oxnard coast. On November 6, 2024, they drove the Mountain Fire from the Somis area into Camarillo, a few miles northeast of Oxnard. It burned nearly 20,000 acres, and Oxnard and Hueneme elementary schools closed.

For Oxnard, Filterbuy advises watching the wind forecast as closely as the fire map. An offshore wind day is a close-up day, even before smoke shows up. Track plumes on the Oxnard wildfire and smoke map and the Ventura wildfire and smoke map.

Our September checklist, done once before Santa Ana season:

  1. Write down your filter size and keep one MERV 13 spare on the shelf.

  2. Find your recirculate setting and learn to close any fresh-air intake.

  3. Pick one clean room and size a HEPA purifier for it now.

No Central Air? Protecting a Coastal Oxnard Home

Some Oxnard homes cool with open windows or a window unit and heat with a ductless wall furnace. No ducts, no filter slot.

In that case, a portable HEPA purifier is your primary defense. EPA's cleaner air room guidance calls for a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's square footage, so a 300-square-foot bedroom needs a smoke CADR of about 200. Skip any unit that produces ozone, which EPA advises against. A DIY box-fan cleaner with a MERV 13 filter is a reasonable stopgap, not a replacement for a certified unit. EPA says to use a certified fan from 2012 or newer and never leave it unattended. If the house stays smoky, head to Port Hueneme's Ray D. Prueter Library, which became Ventura County's first clean air shelter in June 2026. It runs MERV 14 filters, the same particle-first logic Filterbuy recommends at home, one step higher.

On the Oxnard Coast, Plan for Smoke First

Filterbuy has built filters in the USA for more than a decade and served over two million households. Filters that come back after a smoke week are visibly darker than after a clean month, and every fire season, coastal customers ask why the house smells like smoke with no fire nearby. The usual answer is a Santa Ana wind carrying smoke from inland fires.

So our rule tracks particles, which drive most bad days on the coast. Our action line is AQI 100, the top of the Moderate range and one point before the orange band. That's our choice, not a change to EPA's categories. Start with AirNow and VCAPCD guidance. Then, when wildfire smoke or other particles reach the line, switch to MERV 13, set the fan to On so the system filters continuously, run a portable HEPA cleaner in each occupied room (bedrooms first), and close up. Hold off on candles, frying, smoking, and unsealed vacuums while smoke is in. When ozone drives it, close up and wait, since ozone breaks down indoors and no pleated filter removes it.

“The falling line is the part people misread. They see unhealthy days drop by two-thirds and assume the problem closed. What the data actually shows is a floor that keeps dropping and a ceiling that keeps spiking. The spike is the week your filter has to already be in the wall.”

Matching Your Filter to Oxnard's AQI

Filter Choices by Oxnard AQI Condition

Reading on the Map Main Pollutant Filter Response
Good to Moderate Mixed MERV 8 or MERV 11 on your normal schedule
Warm-day ozone, no smoke Ozone Keep your filter; close windows in the afternoon
100 or higher from smoke PM2.5 MERV 13, fan On, HEPA in each occupied room, close up
Near the port or a truck route Diesel PM2.5 MERV 13 year-round; inspect it often

Assumes a central HVAC system with a filter slot.

MERV 11 handles everyday dust and pollen. For smoke, EPA recommends a filter rated MERV 13 or higher in the central system and notes that most furnaces and HVAC systems handle MERV 13 without equipment problems when the filter is replaced often, so checking your system manual is just a normal fit check. Smoke loads filters fast: check yours during a smoke event and replace it when it looks dark brown or black, which can be well before the usual interval. A pleated filter captures particles, while smoke odor is a gas. For odors, see our Odor Eliminator filters, and for more on tiers, see MERV ratings for high AQI.

Filterbuy makes more than 600 sizes with fast and free 2-day delivery to most US states, and auto-delivery keeps a spare ready before Santa Ana season.
