It Doesn't Stay Local

Smoke rides the wind far downwind — you can get smoky air with no fire nearby.

What To Do During A Smoke Event

Simple steps to reduce indoor exposure.

  • Stay In, Close UpShut windows and doors to keep smoke out.
  • Set Fan To "On"Keeps air cycling through your filter, not just when heating or cooling.
  • Recirculate AirSwitch off fresh-air intake so you're not pulling smoke in.
  • Run A MERV 13Built to capture the fine PM2.5 in smoke.
  • Add A PurifierExtra filtration for the room you use most.
  • Wear an N95 if OutsideFits snug to block fine particles — a cloth mask won't.

The Best Air Filter For Wildfire Smoke

During smoke events, the EPA recommends upgrading to a MERV 13 filter — or the highest-rated filter your system can handle — to help reduce the fine particles smoke brings indoors. MERV 13 is the level most home HVAC systems can run while still capturing PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes up the bulk of wildfire smoke.

TL;DR

The live map above shows active wildfires, satellite-detected smoke plumes, and real-time PM2.5, the fine particles in wildfire smoke, for Oxnard and the rest of Ventura County. Oxnard rarely has the fire itself; it gets the smoke secondhand from fires burning inland. On any given day, wind direction matters more than distance. At AQI 100, close the house up, put MERV 13 in your HVAC, set the thermostat fan to On, and run a portable HEPA air cleaner in the rooms you’re using.

Key Takeaways

●        Oxnard’s smoke risk is a wind story, not a distance story. Onshore flow pushes smoke inland; a Santa Ana reverses that flow and drives inland smoke over the Oxnard Plain.

●        AQI 100 is Filterbuy’s action line. That’s our call, not an EPA category change. We’d rather you move at the threshold than after you’ve crossed it.

●        A fire well inland can still shut down coastal visibility. On November 6, 2024, the Mountain Fire’s plume cut surface visibility at Oxnard to one mile, with 57 mph gusts in the city.

●        Satellite plume shading is daytime-only. NOAA’s Hazard Mapping System classifies plumes from GOES imagery in daylight, so after dark the ground sensors are the reliable layer.

●        The EPA recommends a filter rated MERV 13 or higher in a central system during smoke events, replaced once it looks dark brown or black.

How Do I Read The Oxnard Wildfire And Smoke Map Today?

Read it in three layers, in this order: your nearest sensor, then the plume overlay, then the fire icons. Only the sensor shows what you’re breathing right now; the other two explain where the smoke came from and where it may drift. A fire icon 40 miles away with no plume overhead isn’t an emergency, but a red sensor two blocks away is.

1.     Sensor dots. The AirNow Fire and Smoke Map combines thousands of low-cost sensors with official PM2.5 monitors. Nearby dots often disagree, which is normal.

2.     Plume shading. Outlines come from NOAA’s Hazard Mapping System and refresh every few hours. They show smoke aloft, not smoke at nose level.

3.     Fire icons. Locations come from National Interagency Fire Center reports or satellite detection.

This map isn’t an evacuation tool. It reports fine particle pollution, not ozone and not fire risk. If a fire could threaten your home, follow AirNow, Ventura County emergency alerts, and fire-agency instructions first. Nothing here replaces them.

Why Does Oxnard Get Smoke From Fires That Aren't Close By?

Oxnard gets its smoke secondhand. The city sits at sea level on the Oxnard Plain, west of the mountains where Ventura County fires burn, so whether smoke reaches you depends on which of three wind patterns is running. Most start in the Santa Clara River Valley and Santa Susana Mountains, the Los Padres National Forest above Ojai, or the Santa Monica Mountains.

Table 1. The Three Oxnard Smoke Patterns

Pattern What the wind is doing What the map usually shows What to do
Marine flow (most days) Onshore breeze off the Pacific. Morning stratus clears by late morning. Green or yellow sensors in Oxnard even while inland Ventura County sits orange. Normal routine. Check once in the afternoon.
Santa Ana reversal (fall–winter) Dry, warm, gusty northeast winds from the interior toward the coast, the opposite of normal onshore flow. Plume drawn west over the Oxnard Plain and out to the Channel Islands. Sensors spike fast. Close the house before the plume arrives. Upgrade the filter.
Stagnation Light and variable winds, with no flushing in either direction. Slow, steady climb in PM2.5 with no dramatic plume. Run the HVAC fan continuously. Smoke settles rather than blows through.

Pattern framework by Filterbuy. Wind definitions follow the National Weather Service office in Oxnard.

The Santa Ana pattern is the one that hurts, and it drives Ventura County’s most destructive fires. The National Weather Service office in Oxnard has compared these events to the winds behind the 2018 Woolsey and 2017 Thomas fires.

What Should I Do Indoors When Smoke Reaches Oxnard?

Start when your nearest sensor hits AQI 100. That’s Filterbuy’s action line, not an EPA category change: EPA’s Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups band opens at 101, and we’d rather you move at the threshold than after crossing it. Four steps, in order.

1.     Put MERV 13 in the HVAC. The EPA recommends a filter-rated MERV 13 or higher in a central system during smoke events. It’s the whole-home layer, because your central system moves far more air than a portable unit. Check the size as you always would; most furnaces and HVAC systems accommodate MERV 13 without equipment problems as long as the filter gets replaced often.

2.     Set the thermostat fan to On. Auto only filters while the system is heating or cooling. On filters continuously.

3.     Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. This is Filterbuy’s recommendation, and it goes further than EPA’s single clean room. EPA’s sizing rule: smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room’s square footage, so a 300-square-foot bedroom wants a smoke CADR near 200. Skip anything that produces ozone, including ionizers; EPA advises against them.

4.     Close the house up. Windows and doors shut, and don’t add to what’s already indoors: no candles, no frying, no smoking, no vacuuming without a sealed unit.

How Often Should I Change My Filter During A Smoke Event?

Go by how it looks, not the calendar. Smoke loads a filter far faster than household dust, so check it while smoke is in the air and replace it once it looks dark brown or black. That can land well before the manufacturer’s usual interval, so keep spares on hand.

What If Your Oxnard Home Has No Central Air?

Portable HEPA air cleaners are your primary defense, not a supplement. Central air was never standard on this coast, where the marine layer does the cooling, so plenty of Oxnard homes have no whole-home system to upgrade. Size them by the same CADR rule: one per room you’re using, and skip anything that makes ozone.

A DIY box-fan cleaner is a reasonable stopgap. EPA research found the design reduces smoke concentrations. Use a certified fan from 2012 or newer, tape a 20x20 MERV 13 filter to the back with the arrow pointing the way air moves, and never leave it running unattended. It’s a stopgap, not a replacement for a certified cleaner.

Know where you’d go. If it gets too warm to keep windows shut, EPA and county guidance both say leave rather than tough it out.

Reopen deliberately. When the AQI dips, even briefly, open the windows and run the kitchen and bath exhaust fans. Smoke that got in won’t leave on its own.

Local Alerts And Clean-Air Shelters Near Oxnard

Ventura County runs two free smoke-alert systems and a public clean-air shelter, none widely known.

●        Air Quality Alerts and Watches. The Ventura County Air Pollution Control District (VCAPCD) issues an Alert when the AQI reaches or is forecast to reach Unhealthy for everyone, and a Watch at the Sensitive Groups level.

●        Farmworker Wildfire Smoke Text Alerts. Launched in 2021 and the only program of its kind, it texts farmworkers and employers at AQI 151 and again at 501, the Cal/OSHA thresholds for voluntary and mandatory N95 use. Alerts abbreviate Oxnard as “OX.” Text SMOKE, or HUMO for Spanish, Mixteco, and Zapoteco, to 855-522-0034.

●        Ray D. Prueter Library, Port Hueneme. The county’s first clean-air shelter, three miles from Oxnard, with filtered air during business hours.

“

Every fire season we get the same call from the coast: there’s no fire near me, so why does my house smell like smoke? The honest answer is that Oxnard rarely has the fire. It has the wind. Once you know which pattern the day is running, you know whether it’s worth closing up the house.

What The Research Says About Smoke Days And Home Filtration

Three federal findings shape how we talk to Oxnard homeowners during a fire.

1. Asthma ER visits ran 17% higher on wildfire smoke days.

CDC found asthma-associated emergency department visits were 17% above expected across 19 smoke days in 2023, counting any day a monitor reported AQI 101 or higher. That’s CDC’s threshold, just above our action line.

2. One air cleaner can’t cover a whole house.

NIST tested a portable unit in a multi-zone test house: it removed 90% of a single particle pulse when the house was sealed, but steady-state effectiveness fell to 70%, 45%, and 55% by room once smoke kept infiltrating. That’s the evidence behind a unit in each occupied room rather than one.

3. The two layers work together.

In a 1928-built home during a major 2020 smoke event, researchers measured a lower indoor-to-outdoor PM2.5 ratio with a portable cleaner running alongside central filtration than with central filtration alone. Indoor levels still exceeded EPA’s 24-hour threshold. Filtration reduces what’s in the air; it doesn’t clear it.
