How Do You Calculate the Right Furnace Filter Size for Your System?

Filter sizing runs on three numbers. The first is system airflow in CFM, the second is filter face area in square feet, and the third is the face velocity that results when you divide one by the other. Keep that velocity under 300 FPM on a disposable pleated panel, and nearer 250 FPM if you want fine particles captured rather than driven through the media.

Step One. Find Your System Airflow

Residential HVAC forced-air heating and cooling systems require approximately 400 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow per ton of cooling capacity. Consequently, a standard 3-ton HVAC system delivers roughly 1,200 CFM. You can confirm system design specs on the air handler nameplate or verify actual airflow using a professional flow hood measurement.

How to Find Your Tonnage Without Tools

Most homeowners have neither a flow hood nor a legible nameplate. Residential equipment usually encodes nominal capacity in the outdoor unit model number, written as thousands of BTU per hour. Find the three digits and divide by 12,000.

While face velocity serves as a key design variable, static pressure drop provides real-world performance verification. According to research published in ACHR News by the National Comfort Institute, filter pressure drop should not exceed 20% of total rated HVAC system static pressure. On an air handler rated at 0.50 inches water column (w.c.), maximum allowable filter resistance is 0.10 in. w.c. What to Do When the Number Comes Back High

The answer is more media rather than less filtration, and three moves will get you there.

  1. Step up to a deeper filter if your cabinet accepts one. A four inch filter carries several times the media area of a one inch panel in the same footprint, and a five inch media cabinet more again.

  2. Add a second return with its own filter, splitting the airflow across two faces.

  3. Enlarge the return opening you already have.

A lower MERV rating looks like the easiest fix and helps least. It surrenders filtration you paid for and leaves the velocity where it was.

If you rent, or the return cannot be enlarged, you still have two levers. Change the filter more often, because a filter running above its design velocity loads faster than the box assumes. And stay at the rating your system was built for rather than upgrading, since a higher MERV in an already fast slot makes both problems worse.

Three Checks You Can Do Without Tools

Each number is a floor rather than an average, taken from the filter's weakest reading during dust loading, so a MERV 13 held at least 50 percent capture in the hardest particle range even at its worst.
