What's Actually In Fremont Air Today?
What High AQI Means for Your Lungs in Fremont
How to Read AQI
The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures how polluted the air is and how it may affect your health.
0–50 (Good): Air quality is satisfactory.
51–100 (Moderate): Acceptable, but some pollutants may pose minor concerns.
101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
151–200 (Unhealthy)
201–300 (Very Unhealthy)
301+ (Hazardous)
Moderate
Still okay for most, but if you have asthma or allergies, take it easy and avoid long outdoor workouts.

The live air quality index (AQI) map above shows the air in Fremont, California, right now. We built this page to turn that number into a plan for your indoor air.
TL;DR
Ozone (smog) builds on hot afternoons, winter nights trap wood smoke and fine particles (PM2.5), and wildfire smoke can spike readings in fall. At AQI 100, put in MERV 13 and start the four steps below.
Key Takeaways
The American Lung Association's 2026 "State of the Air" report ranks Fremont's metro among the 25 worst for ozone.
Each neighborhood has its own main concern, and Fremont sits where three forecast zones meet.
At AQI 100, Filterbuy's action line, switch to MERV 13, set the fan to On, run a portable HEPA cleaner in each occupied room, and close the house up.
How to Read Fremont's Live AQI Map
Each dot on the map shows a number from 0 to 500; the higher it climbs, the dirtier the air. It reflects whichever pollutant scores worst, usually ozone or PM2.5, so read the pollutant along with the color.
What Fremont's AQI Colors Mean for Your Day
EPA's Air Quality Index sorts every reading into six color-coded categories, each with its own advice.
AQI categories and colors follow U.S. EPA AirNow. AQI 100 is Filterbuy's action line and still the top of Moderate.
Why Fremont's AQI Can Look Different from What You Feel
AirNow's NowCast method blends recent hours, so a fast smoke plume can take an hour or two to show. For block-level detail, EPA's Fire and Smoke Map adds corrected PurpleAir sensors.
Is the Air in Fremont Safe to Breathe Today?
Whether Fremont's air is safe today depends on the AQI on the live map. From 0 to 100, it is fine for most people. Above 100, children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with heart or lung disease should ease off heavy outdoor exertion; above 150, everyone should. With a health condition, follow your doctor's plan.
What to Do When Fremont's AQI Reaches 100
AQI 100 is Filterbuy's action line: still the top of Moderate, but where we tell customers to move. Check AirNow and any Air District advisory first, then take four steps:
Put a MERV 13 filter in your HVAC. It is the whole-home layer.
Set the thermostat fan to On. On filters continuously; Auto does not.
Run a portable HEPA air cleaner in each occupied room, bedrooms first. Pick a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the floor area (about 200 for a 300 sq ft room), and skip any cleaner that makes ozone.
Close the house up. Shut windows and doors, and skip candles, frying, and vacuuming.
Check the filter often and replace it when it looks dark brown or black, which can be well before its normal date. Keep a spare on hand. A pleated filter captures particles, not smoke gases, so it lowers indoor particles without making the air smoke-free.
EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher in central systems during smoke, plus a room-sized cleaner that makes no ozone. The AQI 100 trigger and a cleaner in every occupied room are Filterbuy's own house rules.
Where to Check Fremont's Air Quality Forecast and Alerts
For the days ahead, the Air District (formerly BAAQMD) posts a five-day AQI forecast by zone. Fremont is in the South Central Bay zone. A Spare the Air alert goes out region-wide when any zone is forecast above AQI 100 for ozone or 80 for PM2.5.
Fremont also sits where three zones meet: Sunol, through Niles Canyon, is in the Eastern Zone, and Milpitas, next to Warm Springs, is in the Santa Clara Valley zone. Those zones hold the region's ozone hot spots, so on hot days Filterbuy checks all three.
Check your address, then check one neighbor zone, and believe the difference.

What a Spare the Air Alert Means for Your Fremont Home
Summer alerts target ozone, so drive less and keep windows closed in the afternoon. Any fine-particle alert, including during wildfire smoke, makes burning wood illegal indoors and out under the Wood Burning Rule. In winter, wood smoke is over a third of Bay Area fine particle pollution.
What's Actually in Fremont's Air?
Afternoon sea breezes push Bay Area pollution past Fremont toward the inland valleys, where Metropolitan Transportation Commission data shows the highest ozone. Two local sources add to it:
Freeway traffic. Exhaust from I-880, I-680, and State Route 84 adds ozone-forming nitrogen oxides and near-road fine particles.
Manufacturing. In June 2024, the Air District's Hearing Board ordered Tesla to correct paint shop violations at its Fremont factory after 112-plus violation notices since 2019.

Wildfire Smoke in Fremont: What 2018 and 2020 Taught Us
Wildfire smoke brings Fremont's sharpest spikes. In November 2018, Camp Fire smoke from 150 miles away set a record 14 straight days of Spare the Air alerts. In 2020, the SCU Lightning Complex burned in the hills east of town and put the Mill Creek Road area under an evacuation warning, and that summer's smoke lasted 30 straight days.
Filterbuy's order screen shows the same rhythm: MERV 13 demand spikes in smoke season, and late buyers often find their size backordered, so we stock deeper for Bay Area addresses from April. See the Filterbuy wildfire smoke AQI guide for more.
No Central AC in Your Fremont Home? Here's What Still Works
If your home has a furnace but no AC, set the thermostat fan to "On" on smoky days. In homes with no ducts, portable HEPA air cleaners are your main defense, not a backup: run one in each occupied room, bedrooms first, following EPA sizing guidance.
Filterbuy's Take: What Fremont's Air Means for Your Indoor Air
Filterbuy sees two air problems here with opposite fixes. Ozone breaks down indoors, so on hot afternoons, closed windows and timing do the work. Smoke particles slip in and linger, so on smoke days filtration does.
Across two million-plus households, we have seen the AQI climb hours before families smell smoke, so the filter already in the slot matters most. As David Clark says in our Hayward AQI guide: fit first, then rating.
The households that check the map every morning and keep a spare MERV 13 in the closet handle air quality swings with far less disruption than those reacting after the haze rolls in.

Which Air Filter Fremont's AQI Levels Call For
Most furnaces and HVAC systems can take MERV 13 without equipment problems if the filter is replaced often, according to EPA. Confirm your size before ordering.
What MERV rating do you need for wildfire smoke? MERV 13. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher in central systems during smoke events.
Customers along I-880 have sent us photos of MERV 13 panels gone dark well before their change date, so check the filter, not the calendar.

Supporting Statistics: What the Research Says About Fremont's Air
1. Camp Fire Smoke Hit Every Bay Area Monitor
All 17 Air District monitors topped the federal 24-hour PM2.5 limit (35 µg/m³) in November 2018, against a usual level under 9.
Filterbuy's take: Buy filters before smoke season starts.
Source: KQED, citing Bay Area Air District data
2. Inland Ozone Runs Highest
Livermore and San Martin: over 70 parts per billion.
Oakland and San Francisco: under 55 parts per billion.
Filterbuy's take: Fremont sits between the two, so we plan hot-day outdoor time for mornings.
Source: Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Vital Signs: Ozone Concentrations
3. Nearly Half of Americans Breathe F-Grade Air
44% of people in the U.S. live where the air earned an F in 2026.
Filterbuy's take: Near I-880 or I-680, a snug MERV 11 or 13 should stay in year-round.
