Measure length × width × depth with a tape measure to find the actual size.

Round up each dimension to the nearest whole number to get the nominal size. Example: 16x21.5x2" in → 16x21.5x2 nominal.

Search by nominal size on our site for the best fit.

If the filter you buy doesn't fit, we'll send you a better size.
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value—but don't let the technical name fool you. It's just a way to rate how well an air filter traps stuff like dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke. The higher the MERV number, the more particles it catches—and the cleaner your air will be.

We build every Filterbuy filter to deliver reliable 90-day performance—thanks to smart design and premium materials that do the heavy lifting. Here's what makes the difference:
More pleats = more surface area to capture dust and debris, keeping your air cleaner longer.
Pleats are magnetized to attract and trap microscopic particles—like pet dander, pollen, and smoke.
Engineered to resist warping in extreme temperatures and high humidity.

A layer of metal reinforcement keeps pleats evenly spaced and structurally sound—no sagging, even at high airflow.
Assembled with care. Built to perform. Ships fast, free, and reliably from our U.S. facilities.

Not all air filters are created equal. Pleated filters don't just last longer—they actually clean your air better. Here's how they stack up:

Efficiency:
High (MERV 8–13) – Traps more particles
Lifespan:
90 days – Long-lasting performance
Air Quality:
Excellent – Cleaner, healthier air
Materials:
Recyclable and durable

Efficiency:
Low (MERV 4 or less) – Misses small stuff
Lifespan:
30 days or less – Replace often
Air Quality:
Minimal – Basic protection only
Materials:
Thin, flimsy, and not recyclable
Pleated filters are a no-brainer—more protection, less hassle, and better air for your home.
Changing your filter on time keeps your HVAC system running efficiently—and helps protect your lungs from dust, allergens, and airborne irritants. Here's how often to swap it out based on your needs:

For most homes without pets or special air quality concerns. Great for general upkeep and energy efficiency.

Shedding fur, dander, and allergy triggers can build up fast. Changing your filter every two months helps keep the air fresher and symptoms at bay.

For households affected by smoke, pollution, or respiratory conditions, monthly changes ensure maximum protection.

A 16x21.5x2 MERV 13 air filter measures 16.00" x 21.50" x 1.75" and captures 98% of airborne particles. It fits any furnace, air conditioner, heat pump or air handler built for a 16 x 21.5 x 2 slot. We cut, pleat and frame it to order in our own US plants, and it ships free. Check your HVAC manual to confirm MERV 13 is compatible with your system.
The actual cut is 16.00" x 21.50" x 1.75". The nominal name is 16x21.5x2. That small clearance is what lets it slide in.
MERV 13 is our Optimal tier. It captures 98% of airborne particles, and it’s the tier we point smoke questions toward.
21.5 is a half-inch size. Stores stock whole numbers, so this one is easy to get wrong and hard to find locally.
Change it every 90 days, sooner with pets or smoke in the air.
Check your HVAC manual to confirm which MERV rating your system takes, the same way you’d confirm the size.
16x21.5x2 is a half-inch size, and half-inch sizes rarely sit on a store shelf. Shelves are stocked with whole numbers. So when this one isn’t in stock, someone usually offers you the nearest size instead, and the nearest size is where the trouble starts. A half inch either way breaks the seal, and a filter that doesn’t seal lets air past it.
Here’s what you’ll get offered, and what each one actually does.
If your size isn't listed anywhere, we cut custom filters to the eighth of an inch.
This is why we publish the actual cut next to the nominal name on every size. If nothing on the shelf matches, build a custom filter to your exact numbers instead of forcing a close fit.

MPR and FPR are third-party rating systems run by other companies. They’re listed so you can match this filter to a number you’ve seen elsewhere. Same size in MERV 8 and MERV 11.
Pick the tier that matches what you want out of the air. MERV 8 is the standard choice for most homes. MERV 11 is the one to choose for allergies and asthma, and it’s also the pick for pets and pollen. MERV 13 is the one we point to for smoke. If odors are what you’re dealing with, none of these three is the answer.
Check your HVAC manual to confirm which MERV rating is compatible with your system.
Dealing with odors rather than particles? That’s what our Odor Eliminator carbon filters are for. More on the ratings in our guide to MERV ratings.
It fits any furnace, air conditioner, heat pump or air handler with a 16 x 21.5 x 2 slot. Finding out takes about a minute.
Pull the old filter out and read the size printed on the frame. If it says 16x21.5x2, you’re done.
No old filter, or the printing has worn off? Measure the slot instead: length, width, depth.
Order by the nominal size, which is the rounded name. We handle the clearance.
Most people find their size in the first step. If yours isn’t listed, we cut custom filters to the eighth of an inch. There’s more on measuring in our air filter sizes guide.
This size is compatible with a range of equipment, including some Trane and American Standard air handlers. Check the slot before ordering, and browse filters by brand if that’s easier. Filterbuy is not affiliated with or endorsed by Trane or American Standard.
Match the depth of your slot. A 2-inch filter won’t go into a 1-inch slot, and a 1-inch filter sitting in a 2-inch slot has room to shift. We build this same 16x21.5 face in 1-inch, 2-inch and 4-inch, so the question is only which slot you have.
If yours is 1-inch, the 16x21.5x1 MERV 13 is the one you want. You can also browse every 2-inch size we make.
Every 90 days for most homes. Make it 60 if you have pets or you’re heading into pollen season, and 30 when there’s smoke or heavy dust in the air, because the filter fills up faster then.
Hold the filter up to a light. If light doesn't pass through the pleats, change it, whatever the calendar says.
Don’t want to think about it? Auto-delivery puts the next one on your doorstep on your schedule, and saves you 5%. Edit, skip or cancel whenever you like.
A seal check tells you whether air is going through your filter or around it. Do it at your next change, using the filter you just pulled out. Look at the frame. If one edge has a clean stripe while the rest of the media is grey, air was taking that edge. That’s a sign the size is off, and it’s worth measuring the slot before you order again.
We’re a manufacturer, not a reseller. Your filter is cut, pleated and framed to order in our own US plants and shipped straight to you, which is how we keep a half-inch size in stock when a store can’t.
Fast and free 2-day delivery to most US states.

Three findings from US government sources, none of them ours.
Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors, where some pollutants sit at 2 to 5 times outdoor levels (US EPA). Your filter works on the air you’re actually in.
Nearly half of a US home’s energy goes to heating and cooling (EPA ENERGY STAR). A clean filter keeps air moving through the system that runs it.
Manufacturers typically recommend changing a filter every 60 to 90 days (US EPA). Ours are built for 90.
It’s 16.00" x 21.50" x 1.75". The 2-inch depth is the nominal name; the cut is slightly smaller so it slides in.
No, it won’t fit a 1-inch slot. Match the depth of the slot you have, and shop the 16x21.5x1 MERV 13 if yours is 1-inch.
MERV 8 for most homes, MERV 11 for allergies and asthma or if you have pets, MERV 13 for smoke. Check your HVAC manual to confirm which rating is compatible with your system.
It fits if the slot is 16 x 21.5 x 2. Those brands use several sizes, so check the slot or the old filter first. Filterbuy is not affiliated with or endorsed by Trane or American Standard.
