You order it by its nominal size, 16x21.5x2, and the filter itself is cut slightly smaller so it slides into the slot without forcing. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, the industry scale for how much airborne dust and debris a filter catches. Finding your size takes about a minute. Pull the old filter out and read the size printed on the frame. That printed number is the nominal size, and it’s what you order. If there’s no old filter to read, measure the slot instead.
If your slot measures something not listed, we cut custom sizes to the eighth of an inch.
The filter you receive is cut a little smaller than the name suggests, and that’s deliberate. The clearance is what lets it slide in cleanly instead of binding. So don’t worry if a tape measure across the new filter reads slightly under 2 inches deep. That’s the fit working as designed.

Each tier has a job. MERV 8 is the standard choice for most homes. MERV 11 is built for allergies and asthma, and for households with pets or heavy pollen. MERV 13 is our optimal tier and the one to choose for smoke. For odors, our Odor Eliminator carbon filters use activated carbon, which works on gases rather than dust.
Before you switch tiers, check your HVAC manual for filter compatibility. It’s a quick fit check, the same as confirming your size, and every system’s manual lists what it takes.
A 2-inch filter holds more dust than a 1-inch filter at the same MERV rating, so it reaches the end of a 90-day run with room to spare. The extra depth means more pleated media inside the same frame opening, and more media means more surface for dust to settle on before the filter fills up.
Pleat spacing differs too. Filterbuy’s 2-inch MERV 8 media runs 10 pleats per foot; the 16x21.5x1 MERV 8 runs 14. Deeper pleats need more room between them so air reaches the full pleat wall.

When I pull a 1-inch filter at ninety days, it’s usually packed. A 2-inch has more material in it, so there’s more room for dust before it’s full. Same rating, longer run.

You’re indoors for most of it. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home notes people spend about 90% of their time indoors. It describes filtration as one part of indoor air quality, alongside controlling sources and ventilating.
