A 16x22x2 MERV 8 air filter is a two inch pleated filter for a furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump with a 16x22x2 slot. MERV 8 is our Standard tier and it captures 90% of airborne particles. For most homes, it’s the usual pick. Order by the nominal size printed on your old filter’s frame.

Your whole home breathes through one filter. If your slot takes a 16x22x2, you’ve got a two inch rack, and that depth is worth having. Deeper pleats hold more before you swap them, which is the practical case for 2 inch air filters over one inch.

Finding your size is easy. Pull the old filter and read the numbers printed on the frame. Those numbers are your nominal size, and they’re what you order.
Nominal size is the ordering name. The actual cut runs slightly smaller by design, and that clearance is what lets the filter slide in without forcing. No old filter? We cut custom air filters to the eighth of an inch. So if your slot lands on a fraction, or the size isn’t in the catalog, you can still get an exact fit. Builders frame the compartment around the ductwork, so odd sizes turn up more often than you’d think.

A 16x22x2 needs a two inch rack. It won’t seat properly in a one inch slot, and you shouldn’t force it. EPA guidance on selecting a furnace or HVAC filter puts it plainly: a filter should fit snugly, and you shouldn’t have to bend or crush it. Stacking two one inch filters isn’t a substitute.
