Maricopa County warns that NowCast AQI is an average and lags fast events: it can read green while dust spikes and stay red after one passes. During a haboob, trust your eyes; during smoke, trust the monitor.
Not every hazy Gilbert sky is wildfire smoke, and the three causes need different responses. Smoke is fine particle pollution you can smell that lingers for days. Dust is coarse, gritty, and over within hours. Ozone is an invisible gas peaking on hot afternoons.

That last row is the honest one. MERV rates particle capture, and no recognised standard rates gas removal, which is what ozone requires. Gilbert rarely burns, but it regularly breathes smoke from fires elsewhere in Arizona. The nearest large wildland fuel sits east and northeast: the Superstition Wilderness and the wider Tonto National Forest. Gilbert has more children per household than Arizona as a whole, and children react to wildfire smoke sooner and more severely than healthy adults. An orange reading here is a decision about school pickup, practice, and recess, not just closing windows.
Census data puts Gilbert's median age near 35.5, against 39.4 statewide. A 2025 Nature Communications study across 1,012 communities linked every 10 µg/m³ rise in landscape-fire PM2.5 to a 1.9% increase in children's respiratory hospital admissions, with ages 5 to 9 hardest hit.
Keep outdoor particles out and filter the ones that get in: seal the home, run AC on recirculate, filter continuously with a MERV 13, and set up one clean room for whoever is most sensitive. No single step does the whole job.
Seal the home. Close windows and doors, set the AC to recirculate, and skip candles, frying, and vacuuming. With an evaporative cooler, EPA guidance suggests covering the outside intake with a MERV 13 when safe.
Filter continuously. The EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher during smoke. For most Gilbert homes, 13 is the sweet spot: high enough to catch a large share of PM2.5, low enough to keep normal airflow. Set the fan to On rather than Auto so the system cleans between cooling cycles. Higher ratings can restrict airflow, so check with a licensed HVAC technician first. Fit matters as much as rating: a filter that is close but not exact leaves a gap at the frame, and smoky air takes the gap instead of the media. Set up one clean room. Choose a bedroom with few windows and no fireplace, keep it closed, and run an ozone-free air cleaner sized for the space. If one is out of reach, tape a MERV 13 to a box fan's intake side, never left unattended.
Protect sensitive groups. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with asthma, COPD, heart disease, or diabetes react sooner and more severely. Keep medications on hand, follow any asthma action plan, and call a provider if breathing trouble does not ease with cleaner air. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.
