Santa Clarita sits in a wind corridor between the Angeles National Forest and the Santa Clara River valley, so smoke usually arrives hours before a fire threatens it. Three official maps carry live conditions: AirNow for smoke and PM2.5, CAL FIRE for fire perimeters, and South Coast AQMD for the local forecast. When they turn orange, the fastest indoor fix is a clean MERV 13 with the fan running.

The driver is PM2.5, particles small enough to reach deep lung tissue, scored on a 0 to 500 scale with six color bands. Santa Clarita has two separate air problems, and the AQI reports both on one scale. Wildfire smoke is particle pollution. Summer smog is ground-level ozone, a gas that filters cannot capture.
