Washington has no wildland fuel base, so its wildfire smoke is entirely imported. Plumes from large fires in Canada, the mid-Atlantic, and the Southeast can travel hundreds or thousands of miles at altitude, sometimes with only a day's warning. Geography plays a role too. D.C. sits in a shallow river basin between the Blue Ridge and the coastal plain, terrain that traps pollution instead of flushing it out. NOAA's HRRR Smoke model predicts inbound smoke concentration and injection height up to 36 hours ahead.

June 2023 remains the clearest example. Smoke from Canadian wildfires pushed Washington's AQI above 300, the Maroon category and the most hazardous EPA rating, prompting the District to issue a Code Red and Code Maroon alert. D.C. is also currently in a national wildfire season with elevated activity.

The citywide AQI is an average, and averages hide the corridors that run worse. DOEE's Aclima mobile monitoring has recorded PM2.5 in Buzzard Point at roughly double the national standard, with the Anacostia Freeway corridor and parts of Mayfair also running higher. Treat the citywide number as a floor, not a ceiling, near a freeway, industrial corridor, or densely built area with limited tree canopy.
Exposure also depends on how you spend your day. Outdoor federal and contract workers, grounds crews, postal carriers, construction crews, work full shifts outside regardless of the AQI. Metro and bus commuters get no shelter above ground, sometimes 20 to 40 minutes at the worst hours. Renters without control over central HVAC, common in D.C. rowhouse conversions, cannot upgrade to MERV 13, so a portable HEPA purifier in the main room is the practical substitute.
Orange, unhealthy for sensitive groups, means kids, pregnant residents, older adults, and anyone with asthma or heart disease should shorten outdoor time and skip strenuous exercise. Red or worse means everyone should avoid strenuous outdoor activity. If you must be outside during a Red or Maroon reading, CDC and NIOSH guidance recommends a fitted N95 or P100 respirator, since a bandana or surgical mask will not filter smoke particles.

Close windows and outdoor air intakes during a smoke event, and run your HVAC system on recirculate if it has that setting. Older D.C. rowhouses leak more at door and window seals than newer construction, so the filter does more of the real work than most people expect.
