For most homes, MERV 8 is the better default. Both ratings capture the big stuff (dust, pollen, lint, and carpet fibers), but a MERV 8 also captures the finer 1–10 micron particles a MERV 5 lets pass: mold spores, pet dander, and fine dust. A MERV 5 mainly protects your equipment; a MERV 8 protects the equipment and pulls more of those finer particles out of the air, while still moving air easily through nearly all modern residential systems.

For most households, MERV 8 is the smarter default: it captures far more of the particles that actually bother people, and nearly every modern residential system handles it without breaking a sweat.
The short version: MERV 5 guards the machine; MERV 8 guards the machine and the people in the house.
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, the 1–16 scale set by ASHRAE Standard 52.2 that tells you how much a filter captures and how small those particles are. Both MERV 5 and MERV 8 live in the “general purpose” band, but they are not interchangeable.
Most comparison pages get vague here. The MERV scale isn’t marketing. It’s a pass/fail efficiency test (ASHRAE 52.2) measured across three particle-size groups: E1 (0.3–1.0 microns), E2 (1.0–3.0 microns), and E3 (3.0–10.0 microns). To earn a rating, a filter has to hit a minimum capture percentage in the relevant group.

The takeaway is the jump in that bottom row: a MERV 5 only has to grab about one-fifth of the 3–10 micron particles passing through, while a MERV 8 must capture at least 70% of them, and it also starts pulling meaningful amounts of the finer 1–3 micron range a MERV 5 essentially ignores. That gap is exactly why MERV 8 feels different in a home with allergies or pets.

Ratings are abstract until you connect them to the stuff floating around your house. According to the U.S. EPA, indoor air can carry several times more of certain pollutants than the air outside, and particle size decides whether your filter grabs it. The table below shows how the two ratings compare against common household particles.

Notice the pattern: MERV 5 and MERV 8 tie on the big, heavy particles. The separation happens in the 1–10 micron range (mold spores, dander, and fine dust), which is precisely the range that triggers sneezing, itchy eyes, and that “dusty house” feeling. Neither filter is built to capture smoke or the smallest combustion particles; for that you’d want a MERV 13 filter.
This is the worry that sends people back to MERV 5, so I’ll be straight about it. A denser filter does create a little more airflow resistance (static pressure) than a thin panel filter. With MERV 5 vs. MERV 8, that difference is small. Most modern residential furnaces and AC systems run a MERV 8 with no issue at all. MERV 8 is, in fact, the most common residential filter sold precisely because it balances real filtration with easy airflow.
Where to slow down and check:
Older or undersized systems, or units a technician has already flagged for low airflow.
Systems the manufacturer spec’d for a lower-restriction filter. Check your furnace or air-handler manual.
You feel weak airflow or hear the blower laboring after switching. That’s your cue to size up the filter’s surface area or step back down.
A practical manufacturer’s note: filter construction matters as much as the rating. A well-built pleated MERV 8 has more surface area than a flat panel, so it can hold the rating and keep air moving, and it won’t clog as fast. Bottom line from our HVAC team: if your system is in normal working order, MERV 8 is a safe upgrade. If it’s older or you’ve had airflow problems, confirm with your HVAC manual or a technician before going above MERV 8.
Match the filter to your household, not to a number. Use this quick framework.
Price-per-filter is only half the story; how long it lasts is the other half. Both ratings are affordable, and the gap between them is small, usually a dollar or two per filter. The bigger lever is the change schedule.
As a general guide, standard MERV 5–8 filters get swapped about every 60–90 days, though pets, allergies, and heavy use shorten that. A denser MERV 8 may load up slightly faster than a thin MERV 5, but it’s also doing far more work for your air. Either way, the costliest mistake isn’t the rating you choose. It’s leaving any filter in too long, which chokes airflow and strains the system.

Does MERV 5 or MERV 8 capture smoke? Neither effectively captures smoke or sub-micron particles. For wildfire smoke or fine smog, step up to MERV 13.
