How does a MERV 13 air filter work - Filterbuy MERV 13 Filter

Improve your indoor air quality with MERV 13 air filters! This pleated filter utilizes an electrostatic charge to remove very fine particles from your air, as well as potential allergens like mold, pet dander, bacteria—even particles that carry viruses. In fact, the MERV 13 filter works up to 30 times more effectively and lasts 3 times longer than ordinary fiberglass filters. Also, it doesn’t allow mold, fungus, or mildew to grow in your home or business.

Our MERV 13 filters trap 98% of airborne particles as small as .3 microns. Ideal for superior residential and commercial use and smoke lounges, this filter is designed to last 90 days.

We recommend replacing your filter regularly to ensure your air stays clean, energy costs are lowered, and your furnace works properly. MERV 13 filters are comparable to MPR 1500/1900 and FPR 10. To learn more about MERV ratings, click here.

Need help choosing the right MERV rating?

MERV, which stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, measures how efficiently air filters remove particles from the air. MERV ratings range from 1-20; the higher the number, the greater percentage of pollutants the filter blocks. Selecting the right rating is important, as it will ensure both a) the right amount of bacteria is removed from your air, and b) your HVAC works properly. Read below to make sure you choose the best MERV rating for your home or business!

Is a MERV 13 filter good?

If you’re looking for an air filter that captures more than 98% of airborne particles in a super home or business or smoking lounge, you need the FilterBuy MERV 13 filter! This pleated filter traps particles as small as .3 microns, keeping dust, debris, lint, pollen, pet dander, smoke, smog, mold spores, bacteria, and microscopic allergens out of your space. If you’re looking for a different MERV rating, you can check out our MERV 8, MERV 11, and Charcoal filters.

Is a higher MERV rating better than a lower MERV rating?

While the higher the MERV rating, the more particles it removes from the air, it doesn’t always mean it’s a better filter for you. Not only does a higher rating mean a greater percentage of trapped bacteria, it also means thicker pleats that will require increased air flow from your HVAC. This is why it’s important to choose your rating based on your needs, as well as what your system can handle.

What’s the best MERV rating for furnace filters?

We offer various MERV ratings not only because different homes and businesses need different efficiency, but also because not all furnaces are the same. That’s why there’s no single rating that’s “best.” We recommend considering your lifestyle (allergies, asthma, etc.) and the age of your HVAC equipment to determine the MERV rating that’s best for you. To make sure you’re getting the right MERV rating, check if your furnace manufacturer has a maximum rating your furnace model can use.

How often should I replace my MERV 13 filter?

Our 1”, 2”, and 4” MERV 3 air filters are designed to last approximately 3 months, while our MERV 13 whole house replacement filters should be replaced every 6 months. If you have pets, kids, or allergy sufferers in your space, we recommend changing your filters more often. It’s important to replace your filters regularly, as the older an air filter is, the less bacteria and dirt it’s removing from the air, leading to poorer indoor air quality and higher energy costs.

Why don’t you carry very low or very high MERV ratings?

We carry ratings ranging from MERV 8 to MERV 13, which cover the efficiency most homes need. These ratings provide clean, healthy air and protect your HVAC equpiment. Lower ratings (MERV 1-5), most often used for fiberglass filters, provide minimal filtration. Though higher ratings (MERV 14-20) capture very small particles, they tend to be much more expensive and place more pressure on heating and cooling systems to work harder.
